This indicates a laser pickup assembly problem, overtime the laser becomes weaker until it cannot track the disc properly causing it to skip, one possible solution is to purchase a cd cleaning kit and follow the instructions and attempt a recovery, if this fails it is cheaper to replace the bookshelf system than have it repaired.
unfortunately if your disc is clean and scratch free your laser will be weak and need replacing,, on that model cleaning the laser is a waste of time and money as its a sealed cabinet --check for flaws on your disc itself
Before, when trying to see the problem, I clicked "skip" to see if it would go through all the discs. It did, but still wouldn't open the door. Later, I clicked "play" each time, then "skip", and after going through all 5 discs, the door opened. Go figure.
RD probably stands for "Reading Disc" and ND probably stands for "No Disc". If the CD player doesn't recognize any discs, then either the laser is dead or the motor has died. MOst likely you will have to replace the unit.
I had a rca system similar to this little different. It's a problem you'll find in any cd player after awhile. You'll need to replace the laser. It's quite easy google for some instructions to replace a cd laser. Look around for a laser that can read cd's and cd r and cd rw and you'll be ok. The disassembling might be a bit tuff but it's worth it. I had to replace my hifi laser and after i did sound was incredible again no skipping. Make sure when opening your system you power it on and unplug it to make sure all charge is gone wait 30 minutes or so before you go and operate.
You might try running a cleaning CD in it (which cleans the lazer lens). These are available from Wal Mart and many other sources. If a cleaning doesn't get it going, then you may have a lazer that is weakening and might need to be replaced (sorry!). Hope just a good lens cleaning will do the trick.
