MyKenmore elite stops working after about 8 seconds and flashes f 9.

  • Anonymous Apr 27, 2008

Runs 7 seconds, shuts off & displays F9 code. I held Stop/Clear key in for 4 seconds & it said locked. Wait a bit held key in for 4 seconds & it read unlocked. Uplugging power & resetting clock did nothing. Still shuts off in 7 seconds on full power. Same model as jzelaya's perhap? Mine is 721.80869400. My email is [email protected] I'd like to hear from someone for possible solutions?

Today I have the same problem. Just 2wks after Sears installed the Kenmore Elite Microwave Hood combo. I suspected a loose door switch, so I gently held the door up as is heated my cup of water... not the switch. Other web forums say that the no heating F9 error message is a problem with the Inverter Board (covered by standard warranty) or its the magnetron unit (covered up to 5years). I have Sears coming out tomorrow for warranty repair.

I can top all of you! This is my 3rd Elite Ultra Wave Microhood in less than 1 Year!! 1st one, Installed and no power at all...Powerbox was somehow not working whatsoever. Replaced with 2nd one that the lights would burn out every 2 - 3 weeks. They must replace in order to be under Warranty, if you change Halogen Bulbs, they are no longer Warranteed....so word to the wise...do not change them yourself! Also my whole Door was replaced because the screening on window was damaged in Manufacturing it. Finally, under the Lemon Law, Sears had to replace my Microwave. Received 3rd one in April and noticed the F-9 Code coming up on Auto Cook (not all the time). Called Home Repair to ask what it meant...told me to look it up on the Internet because she was not sure. DUH!!!!! So, found out I am not the only one with this problem...wow!! Called for appt. and TOLD her not to just send someone to see what the problem was and then make another appt to fix it...waste of time and gas money!!!! TOLD her I know what it is and MAKE SURE HE HAS THE PART WHEN HE COMES THE 1st TIME!!!!!!!!!! With the 3 Micro's I have had, they have come out mind you at least 90mls 1 way, approx 18 times!!!!! Rediculous!!!!!! Appt. set for July 15th...so we will see!!!! Wish me Luck!!!! I hope it is either the Inverter Board or the Magnetron Tube and not another reason!! Thanks for all the info!! Debra

    Model 665.61683101 Serial # TRM4127191 Mfg Oct 2002

Kenmore Elite Ultra wave Micro hood Combination ( Kenmore # 61683)

Would not heat but panel light up and turn table functioned.

    Got an error code F-9

opened door a number of times no difference.

Shut the ciruit breaker off at the main and reset it. ( it had not tripped)

    Now seems to run ok.

The plastic housing over the controls is loose. Could moisture be getting to the PC board? How do II correct this?

Is this a saftey hazzard and is it covered by a warranty

    Purchased 12/21/02 .

I had an F9 and it was finally
fixed it turned on to be a lose wire behind the keyboard there is a thing white
wire and it plugs into the board and it was lose sears did not figure this out
till after the third time they came out their service at best is a negative 10.
They lied on the phone it was not until I had an attorney send them out a
letter that they agreed to fix it at no charge thank god I had pre paid legal.
I will never use Sears again nor buy anything from them after that kind of
service and the product purchased now I shop around. To guy dealing with
sears just make sure you document everything and write down who you talked to. I
cannot believe after 4 times coming out to fix this issue it turn out to be a
lose wire on the back panel.

F9 code can mean something different depending upon the particular model.....
1.) IF your Microwave uses "UltraWave technology"/"SmartWave technology"...Then either the Magnetron has failed or the Inverter board has failed OR maybe the control board has failed (HUH?).
2.) IF your Microwave does NOT use "UltraWave technology"/"SmartWave technology" then one or more of the door switches has failed.

** "UltraWave technology"/"SmartWave technology" **
I'll explain a few things about this wonderful technology...
The control board (accepts the pushbutton commands) has to talk to the inverter board to tell it how much power should be applied to the magnetron. The inverter board will then power the magnetron and inform the control board if the magnetron is working OK.
If there is something wrong with the magnetron or inverter board or a there is a communication breakdown between the control board and the inverter board...WA-LA-----F9----

A pretty reliable test for the Magnetron is to operate the oven and listen for a ticking sound 5-6 times about a second apart. If you can hear the ticking....The magnetron has failed..if no ticking, the control or inverter board failed.

Note: This 'technology' may come in other flavors as well

Hello again, Here is my Solution update on my Ultra Elite F-9 problem. After another cancellation on Sears part, they finally showed up! The man came in and replaced my Inverter Board. He had to take down the Microhood from the wall and place it on the floor. First he grabbed my scatter rug that my DOG sleeps on and was going to put my NEW VERY CLEAN MICRO on it! YUK!! I jumped and said........oh my!! Let me get a towel to put down on the rug to protect it better. (very suttle) It took him a little while to dismantle everything and remove the Inverter Board and replace it with the new one. Everything was put together and I helped him put it back up. To make a long story short....I have not had a problem since and it has been approx. a month now. YEAH!!!!!! He did say if it accures again, it probably is the other Item that is bad. So far so good!! I am thrilled that it works great. So I will suggest to everyone who has the F-9 problem....have the Inverter Board replaced! It is after all Warranteed. Best of Luck to you all......and great info site......Thanks, Debra

My Ultra Wave Kenmore Elite microwave has all of the symptoms you list above (reg501).  Is it worth the repair or should I invest in a new one?  Microwave is not under warranty.

My Kenmore Elite Ultra Wave Technology microwave is displaying an F-9 error. What does that mean?

Here are a couple of quotes from another forum:

"Kenmore Elite 36 " over tne counter microwave is supplied by LG made by Gold Star, made in China. It's main problem is the high voltage inverter board supplyed by Sears Parts. If you get a F-9 code on your microwave display screen and the micro quits it's probably this board. Reset the machine by pulling the power plug and waiting an hour. If it is the high voltage board is at fault it will probably fail after 45 seconds of start up. This part is really hard to get at but is less than $100. A qualified technician should be able to remove and repair this item in less than hour. Some techs will quote you $300 labor, don't buy it, it should cost a $100 or less. No need to buy another microwave."

"F-9 on this microwave IS inverter related. There is a service tech troubleshooting document stuffed in behind the control board cover which has some testing proceedures. My problem was the magnatron and checked out bad with the help of this document. It would run for a few seconds making clicks and then say F-9. It has been working great since I replaced the magnatron PN 6324w1a002c."

Note that part numbers mentioned may not for your model.

You can usually find exploded views and order parts by entering your model number at the Sears parts site.

BUT once you have the part number from the Sears parts site, you can often get the parts cheaper here

The Magnatron is a major job and unless you first looked into or had the Inverter Board replaced, you are wasting your time. 90% of the F-9 problems fall into the Inverter solution, Try that 1st, it worked for us!! My Micro now works GREAT!!

Kenmore elite utra microwave 721.63763300

Your model number prefix of 721 means it's made by LG / Goldstar.

F9 code on an LG means either a bad door switch or a loose door switch mount.

Even though a door switch clicks, it may still be bad inside.

This can be caused by slamming the door or by habitually opening the door while it's cooking without hitting the Stop pad first.

If you or a friend decide to look into it, we have critical information on safety, disassembly and door switches at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here: http://www3.sears.com (the 3 is correct)
