Lens will not retract itself.

I have the powershot S3IS and have had it for almost two years now. I am getting a lens error asking me to restart the camera. Then when I attempt to restart the camera, the lens can't put itself away. I hear the motor trying to retract the lens, but it can't. Made sure the batteries were charged. What can I do?

Since the motor is clearly running, it and the battery are OK.
I fear the mechanism is broken and needs specialist repair (if not too costly)

Was shooting with Canon PowerShot S3 IS and the lens won't retract, screen says lens error, restart camera. I have restarted camera, changed batteries etc... still nothing. You can hear a clicking sound like...

The lens mechanism had probably got some dust, sand or grit jamming it and stopping it from retracting. Sadly the lens will be difficult to repair yourself as it needs to be completly stripped from the camera. Find a good repair shop and get a quote locally.

I have a Canon Powershot S3IS and I recently purchased a 2x telephoto lens. When I use the telephoto lens and try to extend the distance as far as it will go, the camera shuts off and says lens error...

Did you tell the camera that you are using an external/additional lens? You have to specify it somewhere in the menu, the camera gives you some options (the lens model numbers) and you need to match it with your lens' model number.

Lens error,restart camera

Lens error is usually caused by mechanical faults concerning lens assembly. The lens cannot extend or retract fully, the error is detected and lens error is returned.
Sometimes this can be fixed playing with the lens during extraction or retraction to help the lens asset getting back to normal.
More often the camera lens must be disassembled and re-assembled by a technician to fix the problem.

Lens error. Restart camera.

This is probably THE most common failure among digital cameras. There's a halfway chance of fixing it yourself, described here: http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/fixing-lens-error-on-digital-camera.html

Lens Retraction

Since your camera should be still under warranty, best thing will be to conntact to the appropriate factory service center for correction of the problem. Good luck!
