First of all plumbers(at-least none that Ive EVER known ) would attempt to use any type of liquid drain cleaner/unclogger but having said that I did have the same problem and here is how I fixed it most tubs have what they call an over flow drain it is the round metal/chrome/brass thing that is on the bath tub under the faucet it usually has two flat head screws one on each side I took that off and the straightened out a metal coat hanger(as best as i could ) and tried to leave a little hook at the end then i put that end(hook-end) down the hole where the overflow cover was at (be aggressive/push/jiggle/twist/cram/...ect..wharever you call it) and you just might be surprised (I was) I pulled out ALOT of yucky Stuff..hair/goop..and whatever else that was(GROSS) anyway drain works fine now.replace the cover make sure that the side that has the cut out/hole is on the bottom when you put the cover back on (That's where the water goes in if the tub is overflowing(*before it actually overflows the water tries to run under/over that and down the drain)Now my drain drains faster than it did when I moved in here.Hope this helps you
Run a short snake thru the line. Somewhere between the drain and the tee into the line with the sink is a clog.
I forgot to add...sometimes using a plunger is enough to manually move the clog out of the drain line...try that first since you won't even need to pull to drain plug to do it.
If you run the sink for several minutes it never backs up? If not, how can it be your main line? If your sink is working then it should be safe to assume the vent and drain are fine and the trouble is in your trap or overflow drain of the tub. If the overflow is blocked you could have an air lock building in your tub line everytime the water starts to fill up.
I would not use acid...no plumber I know uses liquid plumber or acid at all. Every one (I deal with several in my job) uses a snake through various cleanouts to remove any blockage.
If you run the sink for several minutes does it back up as well?
If it does the vent to atmosphere is plugged. You could get on the roof and look through the pipe that riswes out of the area where the tub is. You likely find a bird or squirrel blocking the line.
If the sink is ok you want to disassemble the drain and look for damage or simply replace the stopper assembly. The linkage might be bad allowing the stop to sit low and slow down the draining or else that area is clogged and needs to be cleaned. Remove the lever you use to plug the tub and the stop and linkage will pull up and out of that opening for inspection.

That can't be it. I bought and used one of those Turbo Snakes (the 'as seen on TV' deals)and only got like three or four strands of hair. I also cut the pipe about 8 inches away from the tub, all the way to where it joins with the sink drain, and replaced it with new PVC pipe. I figure the problem might be with the main waste water drain, but I have no clue as to how I go about resolving that. A coworker suggested dropping a hydrochloric acid down the drain, but can I do that without really fouling something up? He said that its what plumbers use when Liquid Plumber doesn't work. Any further suggestions would be very helpful.
How do I fix this problem? I only know basic plumbing repair. Can you provide me with advice on how to get rid of the air lock problem?
