I believe that there are two heads on for CD and one for DVD I think that maybe one of your read/write heads is faulty try and parse the DVD using DVD Shrink if this loads the DVD then your head is working

Does the toshiba sd 2502 , can it burn cds

It is a DVD ROM drive which stands for DVD Read Only Memory. In other words, this drive is meant to only PLAY DVDs and CDs but NOT save data to them.

To burn CDs you need a CD burner. Burners are of 3 types:

CD writer only burns and reads CDs.

Combo drive reads CDs and DVDs but only burns CDs.

Super drive burns and reads from CDs and DVDs.

As you go higher in functionality, the price also increases. Check your needs before you plan to buy one. Also compare prices of all the drives. Note: burn-able media costs are separate.

After I reinstalled my pc, the toshiba dvd-rom (sd-c2502) only plays cds, not dvds.

Try re-installing your the driver for your dvd rom. Then try to put different dvds and check if it can read from your drive. If problem remains, I suspected it's your dvd rom is faulty

CD/DVD Rom suddenly not reading DVDs. I had iTunes installed and had deleted these files. Any connection and how do I fix my DVD player BA

DVDs demand a much higher precision to read a disk than do CDs and when they go down the tubes, the DVD is the first place it will show up. You can try using a cleaning disk but this is often not successful.

DVD-ROM drive reads CDs, but not DVDs Dell x-200

It shouldn't be a driver issue. DVD drives are natively supported by XP. What software do you have installed for playing DVD'? Windows Media Player 11 would be excellent, and it's free from Microsoft. PowerDVD and WinDVD are also good, but you have to buy them.

DVDRW will not read CDs

1)right clik on my computer
go to
properties
device manager
clik on cdrom
uninstall it then re-install it
after reinstall try using the drive

2)update windows ,use custom and see if it finds an updated driver,if it does or doesnt update windows anyhow.
after you restart the computer try using the rom drive.

if that doesnt work;

go buy a cd/dvd rom cleaning disk at your local electronics store and use it.

if all this doesnt work;
buy a new rom drive

DVD drive can read cds with no problems, but can no longer read DVDs

If you have used and/or burned a DVD that wasn't tested to work successfully with your DVD-rom then there is the off chance that it ruined the DVD portion of the drive. I have had the same problem myself and unfortunately the only solution is to replace the drive or get an external drive. If your laptop is still under warranty then see what the manufacturer can do for you.
