Solution worked flawlessly. 8 little screws removed (4 on the botton on the side - two on each side of the power charger interface assembly; 2 holding the verticle plastic covering on the side of the camera, and two additional screws underdeath the plastic covering just removed) was all that was needed to create enough separation in the unit to free the protective cover for the lense. The protective cover for the lense now opens and closes as it should when power is enabled/disabled. Thanks for the post, really paid off.

There must be a problem with your batteries. If you have recently charged your batteries and it happens again, you should try a new set of rechargeable batteries.
You can try conserving charging power usage on camera by turning the flash off so that it doesn't precharge for the next shot.

Problem resolved. My own stupid operating fault. It appears that, in movie mode, you don't just press the shutter button to start a shot, you have to hold it down for a moment. Not made clear in user manual, but I should have twigged earlier.

you probably press the reformat botton and ereased all the pictures on your memory card, i dont think you can get them back
