IBM IntelliStation Z Pro 6221NNG upgrade possiblity

Hi! I just got one old IBM IntelliStation Z Pro 6221NNG machine. I want to install Windows 7 Ultimate on it. Is it possible, any experience? I also like to upgrade memory and graphics card on it. What graphics card (of AGP 8X type ?)it would fit. Thanks in advance.

This: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/get/system-requirements.aspx is a link to the system requiements. As for memory, I can't find out if it's DDR or DDR2. If you don't know either, try downloading a tool called CPU-Z. That should display DDR or DDR2, and I can then recommend something.
As for the graphics card, you could try to get an ATi 9000 series card somewhere.(maybe buy one on ebay? I doubt they still sell them new...) I have one too, in an old PC, and while it doesn't run any new games, it's fast enough for the casual user.

I've just added an *nVidia GeForce 7950 GT 512 MB AGP 8x* to a ZPro 6221 running Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit with no problems. Aero looks good.

Can run windows 8 on IBM intellistation z pro ?

IBM IntelliStation zPro came with different CPU chips through 1997 to 2006. Depending on which year or type your machine is will determine if you can upgrade to Windows8.

The chips used were

IntelliStation Z Pro

Type 6899 (March 1997 to ??)

Type 6865 (October 1998 to April 2000)
Type 6866 (January 2000 to March 2002)
Type 6894 (May 2001 to June 2002)
Type 6221 (November 2002 to February 2005)
  • Dual Intel Xeon at 2.4, 2.67, 2.8 or 3.2 GHz
Type 6223 (August 2004 to March 2007)
  • Dual Intel Xeon with Intel 64 (formerly EM64T) at 3.0, 3.2, 3.4, 3.6 or 3.8 GHz
Type 9228 (June 2006)
  • Dual Intel Xeon Model 5130, 5140, 5150 or 5160
Windows 8 If you want to run Windows 8 on your PC, here's what it takes:
  • Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster with support for PAE, NX, and SSE2 (more info)
  • RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)
  • Hard disk space: 16 GB (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
  • Graphics card: Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver
As you have Type 6223 which a Xeon faster than 1GHz it should work with Windows 8 but not all Xeon processors are compatible depending on which one you have. See this Microsoft site after you check your Xeon chip family on the motherboard or through the Windows system command. Search for xeon.

Can Windows 7 run reasonably well on a IBM Intellistation M Pro 6218? That is, does it have adequate horsepower for basic stuff, or undemanding CAD work.

I would not recommend this. The latest bios is from 2006. This machine would be under-powered for running Win7 and I'm not finding drivers for Win7

Upgrade Intellistation Z Pro 6121 w11 to 64bit Xeon Processors

It helps if you give the right specification - the W11 is the 6221, not the non-existent 6121.
You have 2 x 2.4 Xeon in a Socket 604 package. The only CPUs these could be are the Tigerton - it certainly does support 64-bit operation, as well as VT.
You have little choice in processors - Tulsa, Tigerton and Dunnington.
The Tigerton is a little ripper! 2 x 4MB on-die cache, 1066 internal FSB, wide voltage range and low power consumption (80W).
http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=30779
You have a 4 processor 64-bit box - if it isn't poweful enough for you (and I can't see why - I run 50 concurrent VM users on less), you can only go to the 2.93 Tigerton as an upgrade. The other CPUs have more horsepower, less torque!
Don't get hung up on processor speed - for 64-bit big cache rules.

IBM Blue Screen

I had the same problem with an Intellistation 6868 for years. It just wouldn't load XP but ran fine on Windows 2000 SP4. I tried 3 different XP Installation CD's with no luck. After several attempts at installing XP I bought a clean XP Upgrade from ebay.

It took me 3 goes to install it but eventually I got it in there. If you can get XP to start on the 6868 press F8 and start it in safe mode first then when it's booted fully, shut it down and and then start it clean again. It worked for me. I've been running it for 5 months now and it's fine.

I couldn't get it to work at all on the 6868's onboard IDE so I installed a PCI Raid Card and it boots fine on that.

System:
IBM 6868 52A M-Pro Intellistation
2 x Intel P3 866 CPU's 256 mb cache
2 GB ECC RD Ram
2 x Seagate 320 GB 8MB Cache HDD on a Sunix ATA133 PCI Raid Card
2 x Seagate 10000 rpm SCSI HDD on Adaptec Raid Card
ATI 9520 AGP 128mb Graphics

IBM IntelliStation Z Pro 6221

Mayeb you need to repair the OS - In which case you will need to have SCSI Controller XP OS floppy driver obtained from IBM website.

Start up the computer booting up from the CD ROM. Then when it comes to "install thrid party devices" - press 'S' and insert the floppy with the SCSI Coontroller on it and follow the on screen instructions.
