So if it's miniDV and you have a firewire cable, it should work. Have you followed this sequence:
If your battery is sufficiently charged to run the cam for an hour's worth of tape, fine, otherwise connect cam to AC power. With cam OFF, connect Firewire cable to Mac and cam. Open iMovie, name your project and create so that the viewer screen comes up. Turn on the cam. At this point, your Mac should, within moments, say "camera connected". Cam needs to be set on "playback" mode for capture. Then click "import" button and your Mac will control the cam.
If you still get a "no camera connected" you have to consider the possibility that either the firewire cable is bad or the firewire port on cam or Mac is bad. If you have more than one firewire port on your Mac, try switching. An Apple store should be able to help you determine if you have a bad cable or cam port, if you take both in to try on their Mac. Hope this gets you on track.
Yah, and make sure the camera is set to play the movie just as you would watch it on the camera and not set to pc
Is this compatible with MAC? You may want to make sure as a lot of the camcorders don't come with Mac driversl You may be able to download Mac drivers from Panasonic but if its not comatible then it wont work and you will need to download to a PC and then burn to a cd to use on the Mac...
Take a look to see if you have the driver for mackintosh ....I'm afraid that it is only for windows os type ...and it is not seen by this device ....
After you plug in the camera, restart the mac with the camera plugged in still.
When you plug it in is the Camera ON and in Playback mode?
If you're following the manual's instructions correctly then it should work. I'd recommend trying another usb cord and or trying to connect the camera to another computer just to see what happens. That will help us determine where exactly the "problem" lies.
I was just reading up on this problem. Looks like it's common for it NOT to work with Mac computers.
You could always import the footage into the PC and then transfer it to the Mac via an external hard drive so you could still use iMovie.
There aren't any drivers that you can download. Nothing is listed on their support page, which means the drivers are already built into Windows / Apple computers.
You can try contacting Panasonic's tech support but more often than no when a tech encounters a problem like this they'll just say "Call Apple". When you call Apple they'll say, "Call Panasonic".
The only thing you could really try is hooking it up to another Mac. If you get the same results then it's obviously a specific issue related to the camera. If you don't, then it's your mac.
That's the easiest way of narrowing down the problem, otherwise we'll just be wasting our time speculating as to what could be causing the problem.
I saw that someone was having the same issue your are while using a firewire cable. If you're close to a Mac Store I'd make a visit with your camera so that you can try using one of their macs and a firewire cord.
No problem. Good luck with your camera.
p.s. One more thing you should also try is updating your Apple System Software.

I have tried several combinations. I have had a turned off, and then turn it on after I connect the cable. I have turned it on before connecting the cable. I have tried both of these combinations in both playback mode as well as PC mode as the manual suggests...none of these seem to work.
Panasonic PV-GS35 will not connect to iMac, so can't upload video from mini DV cassettes into iMovie. when I connect with my USB cable, nothing shows up on the iMac saying that the camera or a "N0_NAME" icon is connected, as the manual says is supposed to happen. Anyone know how to solve this?
yes, I already tried all this and it did not work.....thought someone else might have another solution. anyone?

ok, will try that. Do you recommend I put it in playback mode or PC mode on the camcorder, or does it matter?
The USB cord is fine b/c I have used it for other things. I do not have another MAC to try to connect the camera to. I have connected to a PC before and it worked fine. There seems to be something specific to the iMac that will not let it connect. Have you actually connected this specific camcorder to an iMac?
tried this but it did not work...any other thoughts? thanks.

I thought the manual sais that the driver was standard and included with the USB driver on the machine, so no need to download a Mac driver....does anyone know if I actually need to download another driver so that the iMac recognizes the video camera? Do you have a link to that driver?
Yes, you are right, I could put it onto a PC and then transfer to the iMac, but it is just hard for me to believe that there is no way to connect a brand new iMac with a relatively new digital video camera...what a joke that would be. Any other thoughts would be appreciated....otherwise I guess I will be forced to do it the way you mention. Not really a solution as I knew I could do that all along, and have many hours of recordings I want to load onto my Mac. Someone out there must know how to solve this problem!
Yes, that is what the manual said, that the drivers are built in, so need to download anything. Should work, but it doesn't....very frustrating. The manual even discusses connecting to an iMac (not in any great detail), so the comments that it doesn't work with an iMac don't seem right to me. There has got to be a way to connect them. I don't know if it will make a difference, but I have been trying to connect using the USB connection, which is what the manual says to do. There is also a DV port on the video camera, which I believe is a firewire port...I don't have a 4 pin firewire cable to try to connect it to the iMac, but maybe that would work. The manual only suggest using this port if you are pushing content from the PC back to the video camera, not the other way, but I am running out of ideas. Does anyone know if the firewire connection will work? If so, I could go buy one, but don't want to waste the time/money if it doesn't work. Thanks.
Thank you for the thoughts...you have been most helpful, even though we didn't solve the problem.
