Tip & How-To about Heating & Cooling

Home Heating Furnace Repair - How do You Know if Your Heat Exchanger Is Cracked

The guy that came to fix or service your furnace just came out of your basement and gave you the worst kind of news. Your furnace will have to be replaced because it is unsafe. The heat exchanger is cracked and you will have to buy a new furnace. How do you know that he is telling you the truth? What can you do to check him out and verify his finding?

A cracked heat exchanger is a very serious problem, because it can lead to very serious injury or death if it is not corrected. There are, however some contractors that will use this scare tactic to sell you a new furnace that you really do not need. There are also some things that you need to know so that you can intelligently question the contractor and find out for your self whether the truth is being told to you.

First off find out if the guy is using a combustion analyzer. If he does not use one then throw him out and find a contractor that does. That is your first sign that he is incompetent. Have the contractor show you the CO levels in the air stream of the supply duct. Usually you can see the CO levels rise before the indoor blower kicks on. There are some times that the crack will open later and the air from the supply duct will back into the combustion chamber a alter the flame. If this is happening the combustion levels in the exhaust pipe will change when the blower kicks on. I always check this as part of my safety check on every furnace.

If the contractor cannot show you a crack and can not prove to you with his equipment that you are getting dangerous gases into the home, then tell him to hit the road and try to pull his scam on another person. There are many times that I have been called to double check a furnace for a homeowner that was scared to go to bed, only to find out that there was absolutely nothing wrong with the furnace. I even changed out a furnace one time because another contractor had her so worked up that she could not forget what she heard and wanted the peace of mind, knowing that a new furnace was installed in her home. There was nothing wrong with the old furnace!

Be careful, and make the contractor justify his actions! A good, competent contractor will have no problem doing just that. In fact I love to justify my recommendations, by doing this it sets me apart from the crowd and shows the homeowner that I know exactly what I am doing. Use your knowledge to show those that want to take advantage of you, that you are not taking their **** and you will get another opinion before buy from them.

Where should the flame blow when janitrol furnace is ignite?Toward firewall?

It sounds like he incorrectly installed the igniter and it may be a huge danger to your home. A incorrectly installed igniter can cause a excess build up of gas and blow back flame or worst blow up your house. Only have a licensed heating and cooling contractor work on your furnace and not a handy man.

I have water leaking into my basement of my house and its not raining.

I had a water leak in my basement and didn't know where it was coming from. I called the city and they told me to call a leak detection guy and they gave me Tony Schrantz's number. He came out and was able to tell me my water to my service was leak underground. He was able to pinpoint the leak so the contractor knew where to dig to fix the leak. reasonable rates. Just call Water Conservation Services out of Lino Lakes MN. This guy came out right away and had no extra charge for doing so.

My basement has water in it from time to time. I called a service guy out and he said the moisture in my basement is causing my furnace problems. is there anything i can do to correct this problem besides fixing the plumbing issues?

if its the furnace condensating it obviously needs a drain some high efficincy heaters need drains as they burn so efficient they sweat and condensate in flu and you need to get rid of this by draining if the furnace has no drain it must by your venting into area causing it condensate in the area furnace in, so you just need fresh air vent in doorway or wall to let more air in, but i reckon its more the draining of the furnace, if the plumber can't stop the moisture coming in, and didn't give you any solutions i hope you didn't pay him to come there for nothing! and if you are not using heater and moisture getting in still this is a drainage problem or water circuit, which is a plumbing problem not your furnace

Let me pain down the points I have faced which you would see it in the upcoming news; 1. Bought Samsung Window AC ? March 2007, AWT18WDHD from TMC, Begumpet, Hyderabad with assurances of the best after sales service. 2. Got the first Gas Leakage problem in March 2009. Samsung Authorized Services only fixed it with 965Rs. 3. Now again got the Gas Leakage problem in March 2010. Called up Samsung and they asked 2500Rs. 4. After all those below mail exchanges they accepted the fault and gave me some discount and repaired it for 500Rs. 5. They took the machine, repaired it and fixed it at my home all on my cost. 6. The very next day the problem again surfaced. 7. Then I decided to ask Samsung again asking them that how could that be possible. The Call center guys said Samsung would again repair it at its own cost or if possible replace it. But Service Center said I need to change the whole Condenser/ Evaporator (approx 4500 at my own cost) because Gas Leakage is not repairable now. Then with my conscience I decided to approach someone from outside (Cool Line Repair and Services) instead of paying Samsung 4500Rs again. 8. Surprisingly these new guys came home showed me the problem (one leak that Samsung neglected) fixed it in front of my eyes and everything is perfectly working fine without any issues. I had to pay these new guys 1500Rs. only for everything. No transportation nothing everything right in front of me. Bunch of liars sitting out there; Mr. Ali ? 09985298772 (Head of Service) Service Center ? 04064547759 Mr. Ramu ? 09849021476 (Technician) Think If I would have believed Samsung then would have shell 5000Rs. Thank God. At last my Samsung Window AC is up and running. Thanks to Cool Line Repair and Services that did it at my home in front of my eyes, showed me the problem and fixed it with less price than Samsung. I am selling it off and buying LG product which has better after sales service. This was my last engagement with Samsung and henceforth wouldn?t be buying anything from this Company whose after sales services is the worst in Hyderabad. And will make sure I would propagate the whole story to my friends and near and dear ones so that they also doesn?t fall into such traps. Me being the part of such an MNC would definitely alert others regarding this at least for my company in the long run.
