HP 9800 DeskJet
These printers usually determine whether paper is loaded by using a simple sensor with a small plastic arm. The paper lifts the arm (or pushes it down, depending on the design) when it is put into the printer. Take the paper out and look for that plastic arm - if it's broken, or the spring that holds it in place has come loose, that's the culprit.
If that's not the problem, then it's probably going to be something you can't fix yourself. In that case, replacement is usually cheaper than repair for most inkjet based printers.
Please help! I have the same exact problem! My pants leg got caught on the tray, it broke, and I fell, but my printer will not print any 8X10 photo, or any thick paper, and 9 times out of 10, it just crinkles up the ordinary paper! It won't grab any thick paper at all unless I push it with my finger, but still not every time! And, right in the middle of the photo paper, there are 2 cuts in it!! (the 8 1/2" side at the entrance.) Sometimes it tells me to place the paper in face down, but it already is!!
Thank You! Sherry.
