I owned a LHS and 94 New yorker both cars did this, have the door locks checked for a loose wire for the alarm system, something is telling the security system there is a breach, you must lock the doors, shut the door and then open the car door by unlocking it with the key or it will continue to do this. Mine had loose wires and the door lock would not sense the key so I used the passenger door in the same way I described above. IT will NOT Start and run if this is an issue until the alarm is reset by doing as I described. Good luck BTW both cars suffered from failing transmissions, very weak trans in these cars.

Open and look at power supply board for capacitors which are "balooning" or deformed in any way. These look like cylindars on the board. These tend to dry out and make what you are describing occur. Replacing them usually fixes about 80% of the problem you are describing. Those parts run about $0.25 to $0.75 each.. well worth trying, right?

Touch [MENU] to bring up the menu. Touch [REC] to enter the recording menu. Touch [FLASH] to enter the flash menu. To turn the flash off, select "Forced Flash: OFF" (lightning bolt in a circle with a slash through it).
The flash menu is described on page 66 of the advanced manual.

Basically, you put batteries into the flash, put it into the flash mount on the top of the camera, turn everything on, select a flash mode, and start shooting.
The flash comes with a detailed manual describing its operation. There is a section in the camera manual describing the various flash modes. The SB-700 is fully compatible with the Nikon iCLS system, which includes the D3100.

Look for the flash button (looks like a lightning bolt) to cycle through the flash options. Flash options can be limited in AUTO Shoot mode.

The turn signals flash depends on each and every bulb working correctly. When one bulb fails, you will notice a change in the flash frequency, as you describe.

Replace or repair the bulb that is not working, and you should be good to go.

This will describe how, if you have been using a speedlite alot, than the little tab under the shutter release side of the hot shoe can get bent down thus constantly pressing down (toward the bottom of the camera) the small button which deactivates the pop-up flash even when the speedlite is not attached. Just bend the tab up a little with a jewler's screwdriver, turn the camera off and on and voila!! Fixed!!! Dan describes pushing the tab down, but on the xti, the tab needs to be bent up to release the flash deactivation switch and fix the problem. Thanks to Dan D on photonet for saving me a service call.
