Hi,

Drive A pertains to the floppy drive, you need to go into the BIOS and disable it from booting as most computers don't need a floppy drive these days.
Once disabled the error message will go away.

Usually to get into the BIOS restart the machine and repeatedly press either Del or Esc to enter the BIOS.

Good luck and please post back if you need anymore help.

Regards.

Why does my computer light come on but want boot and want show a screen and making a beeping sound

In simple terms, you have a hardware failure, probably in your motherboard, hard drive or memory.

The beeps your hearing, are there for a reason. The way it works, is, when you first turn a computer on, it goes through a "Power-on, self test", (know as a POST).

During this period, the BIOS queries the system hardware, such as the hard drive controller, the i/o ports, the memory, etc. and expects to receive back a specific return code which indicates that the specific hardware is running properly.

If it finds a failure in some element of the hardware, it will issue a specific pattern of beeps to tell you which part of the system is failing. (It does this because the system may be unable to display the error on the screen).

Each of the different BIOS manufacturers (BIOS is an acronym for "basic input output system, the hardwired code that talks to the actual hardware), have their own series of short and long beeps, for the different type of failures. So to know where the failure is, you must first know what BIOS manufacture you have in your computer.

Some of the more popular manufacturers are: AMI, Award, IBM, Phoenix, Macintosh, etc.

When you first turn on our computer, the display will report which brand of BIOS you have, and its version.

Once you determine the brand, you can go to any number of web pages that have a cross-reference for the beeps for each brand on BIOS.
I think most adhere to the old IBM PC beep codes as follows:
No beeps: no power, bad CPU,
1 beep: normal
2 beeps: POST/CMOS error
1 long beep, 1-short beep: motherboard problem
1 long beep, 2-short beeps: video problem
1 long beep, 3-short beeps: video problem
3 long beeps: keyboard error
Several long beeps: memory failure (most common fault)
Continuous hi-lo beeps: CPU overheating

You can check with the following websites to get an idea of what's going wrong.
Computer POST and beep codes
How to Diagnose Computer Beeps eHow

Often times a SIMM has come loose in its slot (or corrosion on the connector tabs). If your getting a memory error, you can try opening the box and try re-seating each of the memory Simms to see it that might be the problem. (When you have them out, look at the row of pins along the bottom and see if any look corroded.)

Beeping sound when starting

Usually when you first turn the power on ... it's usual to hear a couple of beeping sounds . And then, you may hear whirling/clicking sounds when your disk starts up (rotating) and your CD/DVD drive starts up, etc.. Then the monitor/screen lights up and starts to show the operating system (e.g. Windows) panel ... as it starts up.

If your system just beeps ... and beeps ... and beeps... and nothing else happens, the screen doesn't light up and show anything (for a few minutes), it likely the system is not starting up properly.

If you can clarify what actually happens, maybe I can offer more suggestions/information to help.

Does not boot up, fans start, internet plugs light, clicks on and off.....seems this is a common problem for these machines, what is the fix?

    Instructions
    1. When you press the Power button to start the boot process, the LED lights glow while the computer verifies that there is sufficient electrical power to activate the hardware.

Effect & Solution: When you press the power button, the LED lights on the computer do not glow or the LEDs blink briefly and then stop. There is no sound of the fan or hard drive spinning, and the screen remains blank. The computer will not start if there is insufficient battery or AC adapter power.
    2. The BIOS queries various hardware components used for the startup boot process.

Effect & Solution: When you press the power button, the LEDs glow but there is no fan or hard drive sound. The LEDs may glow briefly and then go out.

      Or

The LED lights blink, stop, and then blink a second or third time, but there is no sound from the computer and the screen remains blank. The sequence of the blinking lights indicates a specific error code.

      Or

A series of beeping tones is heard. The sequence of beeping tones indicate a specific error code.

If a hardware component has recently been replaced, or if the PC has been jarred or shaken, there may be a loose connection to the memory chips or hard drive which prevents the computer from starting.
    3. The BIOS loads the basic input (keyboard) and output (advanced LEDs / display screen / boot drives) devices into memory.

Effect & Solution: When you press the power button, the LEDs glow, the fan or hard drive sounds, are heard, but then the boot process stops and a black screen - with an error message - displays.

The boot check has detected a communication error or conflict with a hardware component that must be corrected.
    4. The BIOS loads the Windows operating system and starts the services that allow low-level control of all of the background operations.

Effect & Solution: When you press the power button, the LEDs glow, the fan or hard drive sounds, are heard, the HP or Compaq Logo displays on a black screen, but then the boot process stops and a blue screen - with an error message - displays.

The boot check has detected a hardware driver error or a software conflict that must be corrected.
    5. Control is transferred to the Windows loader to initiate the display of the advanced settings in the Windows environment.

The Windows logo displays during this step.

Effect & Solution: When you press the power button, the computer performs all the steps in the boot process, but after the Windows Logo displays, the moving Windows progress bar or the rotating cursor stops moving and the boot process stops.

An error message may display on a screen with the Windows logo. In some instances, there is no specific error message.

      Or

A black screen appears and the computer attempts to restart.

The Windows self-check has detected a software conflict that must be corrected.

    Computer problem, help.

This generally indicates a hard drive crash/failure, in which the hard drive will need to be replaced. Rare, but occasionally you will get this error from an operating system glitch. Before you run out and buy a new hard drive, try reloading the operating system. If you have any problems during or after the install, then the hard drive is shot.
