Sounds like the battery is weak or the alternator isn't providing enough amps to keep the engine running and power the lights at the same time.

The best way to test the alternator is to crank your engine and leave it running. Pop the hood and disconnect the negative battery cable. If the engine dies with the cable disconnected, it's the alternator. If it keeps running, the alternator is fine. Just be mindful of the belts and fans. If you have a dc voltage meter, that's the best way to check your battery. Should be around 12-13.6 volts DC.
