At first pics were good, now they are grainy.

I would check to see if the resolution may have been changed inadevertenly. Grine in most cases result at very low resolution settings.....increase the quality of the image and reshoot to see if this improve the photos...good luck.

When I download pictures from my sony cybershot 3x they are all 48 inches wide - huge, so they are taking up all the memory on my camera and computer. How do I change the size yet keep high resolution? ...

well if you want the pictures smaller effectively you will lose quality. There are many options here. Keep the high quality ones you want and plan to possibly need that high of quality, then the rest convert to a lower quality. You can also just change the settings on your camera so that all the pictures are a lower quality. Also what format are the pictures in right now?
Thank you,

Grainy pictures

You have likely set the camera to shoot photos in low resolution, or high ISO or both. Check your camera manual for detailed instructions on how to set these options.

If you don't have your computer manual, you can download one from this page at Canon.com. This is for the Powershot S500, this is the same camera as your IXUS 500, they just gave it a different name in different countries.

Always set the camera to shoot in the highest quality resolution mode. Memory cards are relatively cheap and you don't want to end up getting that photo of the lifetime but because you shot it in a low resolution mode you can't get a good print!

If you are shooting in low light the camera may be automatically boosting the ISO. There are only 3 ways to shoot in low light:

1) Flash - only works when your subject is relatively close to the camera.
2) Increase the ISO which results in noise in the dark areas of the image.
3) Use a tripod and a long shutter (slow shutter speed).

Canon Rebel EOS - Pictures download read Low Resolution

Canon Digital Rebel cameras let you set the image resolution from small jpegs (low resolution) to large jpegs (high resolution) to RAW (best quality, but require post-processing in your computer before you can print them). It's possible that as you were getting to know your camera you accidentally set the image size and quality to a low setting. Now you just need to change it back!

You make this change in the on-screen menu, under the camera menu (first menu, with a camera icon), first item (Quality). Although Canon no longer has the manual for this camera online, you can see This Review Page for more details on where to change this setting on your camera.

Changing the resolution on my camera before i go to photoshop

using the RAW setting will give a higher quality photo, the other formats compress to jpeg causing you to loose some of the original photo information. the ZoomBrowser EX program allows you to edit the RAW image, I recommend getting the large prints done at Kinkos or some place like that. I've gotten poster size prints done that look very clear. Use a tripod to combat camera shake, it is very apperent at that size of print. Also a low ISO to help reduce noise.

Slr 20D canon camera

There should be a setting (usually in "image settings" or similar) to change the image quality between low, medium, high and RAW.

You probably want high.

Turn the wheel to the tool-icon (settings) and have a browse through the options. You'll find it without much fuss. =-]
