Looks like you have a major problem. The most common reason for this kind of failure is that the driver card (hardware) in the laptop has failed and needs to be replaced with a new one.
If the laptop is under warranty, then you can get it fixed that way - contact your laptop supplier for this.
Otherwise, find a computer shop that will be able to install a new driver card for your model of laptop.
Your laptop will otherwise be useless without a fully-functioning screen.
If the laptop is an old model and you have sufficient funds, then it may be worth considering the option of buying a new replacement laptop. If you take that course, you will need to copy all your data from the old/failed laptop to the new one:
DO THIS: Assuming the hard drive on the failed laptop is still operational, you will be able to copy all your useful data from it across to the new laptop's hard drive.
The easiest thing to do is take out the hard drive from the failed laptop, put it into a portable drive carrier with USB connection (you can buy this from a computer shop) and copy the data from it onto the new laptop's hard drive. That can be a real help when a laptop is not working and I have used it on several occasions when I or my customers have had a broken/failed laptop.
If the hard drive is faulty and then you cannot backup your data. There are companies that can recover data off faulty hard drives BUT it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services. You can buy a hard drive for your Gateway, it does not need to be the same make or model BUT if you get a larger hard drive you need to check the laptop's specification to see the maximum size hard drive the BIOS can support.
Wow, why not just make sure you have access to an Operating System Disc that is the same as your operating system. Then periodically copy your My Documents folder to a USB Flash Drive or to an external drive for backup purposes. Most times those Recovery Discs don't work. The only good recovery that works most times is when the manufacturer burns the partition on the hard drive.
if the hard drive has a locked password on it, you cannot remove it unless you have the password. you might try using some SMART disk utilities, but in my experience, it has no worked. Some hard drives have a list of reset passwords, but I have never had success in getting these to work.
try downloading Hiren's boot cd. (gogle search it) it has many utilities for hard drives on it. iyt may have something to help.
alternatively, buy a broken identical model on ebay and swap the PC board. make sure to have the same hardware revision level and model.
I'm pretty sure it will. The only thing is that Gateways of that generationn used a custom connector which plugs onto the hard disks standard IDE / ATA connector.Just pull this extra connector off and you can use the disk in any machine.
Also ,Toshiba used similar adapters,so if Toshiba's using one on your model, then you'll need to palce the toshiba adapter onto the hard disk from your Gateway. You may also have to go into your BIOS ,and make sure the BIOS recognizes the disk if your BIOS isn't already set to "auto detect".
well you can buy a card for about 20 quid on ebay etc but new it will cost you a lot more ! YES THE HARD DRIVE IS VERY IMPORTANT TO KNOW ABOUT AND 150 POUND THEN YOUVE GOT A GOOD DEAL IF IT IS MORE THAN 3 YEARS OLD YOU ARE BEING A BIT RISKY YOU GET A LOT OF PEOPLE LIKE THIS SAYING ITS JUST THE CARD THATS BROKEN BUT YOURE NOT LOOSING MUCH FOR 150 QUID AND YOU SHOULD ALSO ASK THEM TO FORMATT THE LAPTOP !
