Make sure your replacement cartridge is fully seated and locked down correctly. The E is telling you that the printer thinks the new cartridge is not there. Some HP models are very particular with how the cartridge is installed.
An additional test. Can you thru the computer to a test print and have the replacement color show up on the print out?

Remove the colour cartridge and then see : "E" is displaying in its display board. If "E" appear then put it back in carriage and remove black cartridge. If "E" doesn't appear it means your black cartridge is not working properly. and vice versa with colour cartridge.
