The small plastic pieces that are located under the agitator center cap that grip the agitator and turn it during the wash cycle are worn out. They are called agitator dog ears or clutch dogs. They must be replaced.

  1. Unplug the washer.
  2. Remove the fabric softener dispenser, if there's any, by pulling it off the agitator top. everything works but the agitator - cf99d03.gif

  17. Press down on the fabric softener dispenser or cap until it is all the way down on the agitator.

Why is the agitator not agitating?

Is this a machine withwith an agitator & a fixed drum? If this is the case I would think that the drive belt has stretched or broken.

Frigidaire top loader tries to agitate. How do I fix?

Sounds like a drive belt slipping. Look under the base and see if the belt is tight between the motor and agitator base

My agitator is not working in my washer- it is a kenmore elite. the agitator seems locked up. Everything else works fine.

The agitator is driven by a couple of different methods. The first is the agitator is splined and slips onto the matching splines of the agitator shaft from the transmission. The second is the use of a bell coupling which is splined to the agitator shaft as well and the agitator snaps onto the coupling. If the agitator does not agitate, first remove the agitator and watch the agitator shaft to see if it is working properly. This will require a small load setting of water and the machine set to run. If the agitator shaft is working properly, it is either the splines on the agitator or the bell coupling that is defective. If the agitator shaft does not work properly, the problem is in the transmission.
Hope this helps.

Maytag 6300 won't agitate durring wash cycle

HI. this is usually caused by a faulty drive assembly(agitator gear components and clutch malfunction).

I recommend replacing the agitator components by purchasing a Agitator replacement kit. and, replace the clutch assembly as well. this will fix this issue.

Everything works but not the agitator

The plastic inside the agitator cog are worn.

Take off the top of the agitator. If any screw are available remove them. If not grab the agitator from the bottom and yank off. Unscrew the agitator drive cog and inspect underside of agitator. Go to an appliance repair shop and reorder a new one. Between $15-30.

Washer will not agitate

A wears out clutch might prevent the washer from agitating well or at all. If the clutch is worn, you need to replace it. Good luck!
