To connect to your wireless router, it needs the router’s wireless settings configured and also needs the wireless cards in all the laptops and or computers to be configured with the router’s wireless settings. Then the laptops and desktop computers can communicate with your wireless router.

To set-up and secure the wireless router from unauthorized access, follow these steps: -
1. Connect the wireless router to your computer with a LAN cable.
2. Start your browser and enter the router's configuration URL IP address.
3. Enter the router setup, login and password
4. Change the admin password
5. Go to the wireless settings and change the default SSID and turn off SSID broadcast.
6. Setup encryption key the strongest is WPA2 (if not then WPA).
7. For further security measures - turn on MAC address filtering and enter the MAC address of the wireless cards on the computer/s you want to connect to this wireless router.
8. Record the settings you have made and keep it in a safe place and Save the settings.
9. Configure the wireless cards on the computer/s with the SSID and encryption settings of the router.
10. Remove the LAN cable between the router and the computer then the computers should be able to connect to the router wirelessly.
To access the Internet you need to connect the DSL or cable modem to the WAN (Internet) port on the wireless router.

I have a 802.b I can brouse the enternet with a cable but not with a wireless laptop the laptop is a dell with a wireless card and the router see's the laptop and gives it an IP address and the laptop...

As your router and laptop can see each other it is not a connection issue and you’re your SSID is correct. More than likely that WEP/WPA or pass phrase are the same on both router and all wireless devices.

Dlink router wont connect to enternet

so that means you are not able to go online using the router.
If you connect the computer directly to the modem, does it work ?
If that works then the modem is working properly.
You can try to reset the router for 30 seconds , then unplug the power to the router and plug it back in. Wait for 1 minutes and then try to set up the router manually.

Wireless without a cable

Some T40 series (especially T42) laptops have built-in wireless cards and you only need to install the wireless driver.
If you don't have a built in wireless card you can purch a PCMCIA wireless card and inset it into the PCMCIA slot on the laptop.
These cards are common and are available from several manufactories such as Netgear and DLink.

Is the wireless enabled for your router? Try typing 192.168.0.1 and use the default password to access your router settings. Check if wireless is enabled, SSID is broadcasted, and security is off or properly configured.

Can't see any wireless networks in the area, but I know there are many

Can your other laptop see the laptop with the problem. First check that it is being given an IP address in your router and set to obtain IP address automatically. You may need to give the wireless card an ip address and DNS address yourself within the same range as the others; this way you know the addresses are correct. Just check that your problem laptop has the same network group name, right click my computer>properties>computer name and check the workgroup name is tha same as rest of your pc's. Keep trying you'll win in the end!
