I'm guessing you might mean model KCMS185JSS0, KCMS185JSS1, KCMS185JSS2, KCMS185JSS3, or KCMS185JSS5?

To allow us to help you effectively (at no charge), please post a
NEW problem to FixYa, and please include your brand name and the full model number from the tag in or on the unit, your symptoms ("won't heat"), as well as the answers to these questions:

- When you try to microwave are the inside light, internal cooling fan and turntable all working?

- Is there any unusual noise or is it louder or quieter than normal?

We have a sound clip here of what a microwave should sound like when the cooling fan and high voltage section are working.

(A loud buzz, hum, or groan is usually a shorted high voltage rectifier diode, but a sound like gurgling into an empty coffee mug is one symptom of a failed magnetron, and yet the mag can be bad without that sound.)

- If yours is making an odd noise, which does it sound like?

BUT If you or someone you know wants to go ahead check out the diode and magnetron, see these links:

http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/diode.html
(if it is NOT shorted or burned looking, it's probably fine)

http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/mag_test.html
(continuity can be good even though mag is bad!)

Won't heat up

A model number would help us help you pretty specifically, but without it, here's a generic answer.

Generally, the most common causes of a failure to heat are:

- bad door switches or door switch mounts
- loose or corroded connection at the magnetron
- problem or loose connection on the control unit circuit board
- bad magnetron
- shorted high voltage diode

If the inside light, turntable, and internal cooling fan are not working, then it's probably a door switch. See my door switch help file here.

If the inside light, turntable, and internal cooling fan are working, then the problem is likely in the high voltage section.

In that case, here are some links you or someone you know can use for test help, but read their safety warnings first:

http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/diode.html
(if it's not shorted or burned, it's probably okay)

KitchenAid KCMS1555RSS stopped heating. Everthing else works, full display works, time counts down, turntable rotates, light comes on, etc. but no heat. makes loud hum. Magnatron? Cost to replace? Unit is...

If it is making a loud noise, check the diode and magnetron for damage.
BEWARE OF LETHAL VOLTAGES!
The fault may be just the diode and a reasonable cost will be involved. If it is the magnetron, depending upon where you purchase one from will command the price.
Hope that helps.

KitchenAid KCM2145JSS-1 built-in Doesn't Heat

Everything working is a real good sign. Most likely all thats wrong with your unit is a blown fuse. Go to http://www.partselect.com/MultiModels.aspx?ModelNum=kcms145j&SearchTerm=fuse&RefineSearch=0 and you will find the fuse. It's behind the touch pad with most all the other workings. Very easy to replace and cost only $11.76. It looks like an old round glass car fuse but it's made just for micro waves. It's most likely a 20 amp fuse. To get to it, take all the screws out from the back that hols the case on. once you have removed the case you will be able to locate the fuse. Good luck.

I had the exact same problem. There are two switches on the door. One is a safety lockout switch for the magnatron. The switch just wears out.
