If this is a projection TV, im suggesting to check the bulbs for your television, it might need replacement. Bulb might be busted already, bulb is a consumable part so you can order it from your manufacturer.
Thanks for using FIXYA, keep me posted for inquiries.
Had similar problem. Thought it was the lamp. Examined old lamp but it appeared to be good. Ordered a new one anyway. Changed the lamp but the TV screen would not come on. It would make the usual noise as it was going to come on normally but it would cycle 3 times & then turn off. The LED lights in the front panel would indicate a defective lamp. Then read about the ballast. Changed the ballast & still same problem. Tried starting the TV without the lamp installed & noticed that the color wheel did not spin. Removed old color wheel & discovered it was broken. This appears to be the cause of all of my problems. I wish I new earlier of the test-turn on the TV without the lamp being installed & check to see if the color wheel is spinning. Would have save money on the lamp & ballast.
Make sure lamp cover is put back in its position properly after bulb replacement.
If I have info about model and brand of your TV then I might offer better help to fix it.
Hold Vol - on tv and TV/Video button on remote same time for 5 seconds. serv menu will come up. select lamp time and reset with vol- on remote to zero. Turn off tv to remove menu.
New bulb is just fine. 3 blink shows that lamp cover after replacement of bulb in TV is not fixed properly or not seated well in its position. Put new bulb and carefully place back lamp cover in its position because lamp cover will press tinny safety switch inside that will send signal to system control of TV that lamp is installed properly. Turn On TV and get vivid picture of Sony. Thanks.
In regards to your issue, I got a question for you: when your tv turns on or tries to turn on, do you or can you hear a humming, buzzing or rapid click noise coming out of the tv? if you say yes this could be an issue with the ballast and most likely needs to be replaced as soon as possible the definition of a ballast and how it works is this: A ballast is an electrical component used with a fluorescent bulb (or mercury vapor lamp or arc lamp) to conduct electricity at each end of the tube. It supplies the initial electricity to the bulb that creates light, and then it regulates the amount of electricity flowing through the bulb so that it emits the right amount of light
