I also don't use fabric softeners and have terrible black marks--apparently unremovable--on clothing and linens, especially white ones. I've been having an email exchange with the Fisher & Paykel people, who suggest that using a biodegradable liquid detergent is the problem. So far, using a "conventional" powder detergent has solved the problem--perhaps temporarily. But we'd really prefer a biodegradable one, especially since we have a grey water system and recould use the laundry water on our plants.
Do you mean Black, really black marks? Perhaps dark brown.
Some marks comes from moldy seals, other marks comes from leaking gears from the machine. Examine the marks, check if those marks are oily or not.

Dispenser wholes are probably clogged and all the softener is not dumping when it is supposed to!. Top loaders usually have a little cup like place to add the softener in the top of the agitator!
Those the Manuel tells you to rinse with water occasionally!

Believe it or not, I got the black marks out of my white sweater with generous application of WD40, then of Spray-n-Wash--also LOTS of scrubbing. But I still don't understand why the machine leaves those marks. I repeat, I DON'T USE FABRIC SOFTENER--and never have!!!!
