Laptop apprears to go into sleep mode while I'm using it

I have a Toshiba Satellite P205 with Windows Vista. While I am using the computer, it appears to go into sleep mode, but I cannot turn it back on. The screen goes blank, but it's still lit up so it's not completely black. The hard drive light is not blinking so I assume the computer is no longer running but I am not certain. I just bought the laptop and thought it must be a lemon so I exchanged it for another and the new one is doing the same thing. It is literally shutting down while I am using it so it can't actually be going into sleep mode and I changed sleep mode settings to not be activated for 45 minutes. Any thoughts?

Yeah, I have the same problem with my Toshiba Satellite P205D-S882 which I bought a few weeks back (Jan 2008).

I just bought a chill fan today to see if it'll fix it.

Please let me know if anyone has any insight into this issue.

I have the exact same problem. Goes right into some form of sleep/hibernate mode while I am using it. Thought it was maybe the website I was using until it has happened continually. Called Toshiba support and yeah they were not any help. Told me to take out the battery to reset it; reboot with the recovery disks. It did not help. Any help????

I have the same problem and no it is not the battery or charger problem. I have done everything possible (just short of taking it back to bestbuy); reformatted, checked the ram by removing and reinstalling, ran McAfee, etc.

Does anyone have a solution to the problem? It is going into hibernate mode for certain with no way of unlocking it without powering it off then back on again. Sucks when you are using it for work documents!!

Bob, did the cool fan work?

  • trace72 Feb 24, 2008

Yes - please help exactly the same and I am about ready to throw the damn thing. I just bought it 3 days ago.

I have the same problem with model Satellite P200D (PSPBLC-FT608C)I

I read on Toshiba Web site that it might be the BIOS version

  • tamille Mar 26, 2008

I just purchased a Toshiba Satellite P205D-S7802 two days ago (Best Buy) and I have the same problem with the monitor appearing to go into sleep mode. I've read several blogs with customers making even exchanges only to have the same thing happen again. I have a gut instinct to return it for another brand. The only problem is they don't have another 17" at that same price ($799), and they'll probably charge me a restocking fee. I need a laptop for online classes, and I cant afford to lose anything that I'm working on. Does anyone have any suggestions? Please advise. Thanks. P.S. Toshiba support offered none (support that is).

I have the same problem with P200D-A210,appered after 2 days, when laptop hibernates,it cannot be turned on,here is my solution:when I plug out the charger and push hibernate everything is ok,only when powering on the charger must be plugged out too, plug in the charger when laptop starts. This is temporary solution, but works,I will buy usb HDD,backup everything there and then return it to service for repair,I think it is a MOTHERBOARD problem, not OS or BIOS problem, because i did all this stuff and didn't worked...

same exact thing as above... brand new laptop, has been doing it since i got it, exchanged it and the new one does the same thing.

To my knowledge it could be hibernate mode for laptops to save battery life when not plugged into the wall, try pressing the power button, my Compaq did that too. Also don't hold down the power button as after 5 seconds it just shuts off the laptop, unless you wanna do that.

I found that my laptop was over heating and going into sleep mode. I purchased a heat dispersion pad and that seems to have resolved the issue.

I have a Toshiba Satellite P205-S6237 with a built-in Chicony USB 2.0 camera, I cant get it to work, need help

Many Toshiba laptops, including Satellite, Portege and Qosmio models, feature built-in Chicony-brand webcams.

The Chicony webcam can be problematic, especially when running a 32-bit version of Windows Vista.

Microsoft has released an update that will correct problems with starting the webcam after terminating "Sleep" mode.

Users may also have to install the appropriate driver or webcam software to correct webcam problems.

Dark or Black Webcam Image Problems

Toshiba laptop owners may have problems with the webcam displaying as dark or completely black a few seconds after the initial image appears or immediately after engaging the webcam.

Users should ensure that the webcam indicator light is engaged.

If not, users should run the "Camera Assistant Software" to turn on the webcam.

Low light can cause the webcam to power off and to display a dark image.

Users can tweak the light and contrast by manually increasing the lighting in the room or by turning on "Night Mode."

If these steps do not correct the dark image problem, users may have to reset the webcam itself, reinstall the "Camera Assistant" software.

Webcam Problems After Terminating Sleep Mode

Toshiba laptop owners with Windows Vista (any 32-bit edition) installed and the Chicony webcam may have problems starting the webcam after restoring the laptop from "Sleep" mode.

"Sleep" mode powers down a number of hardware components in the laptop.

The webcam is capable of entering a non-operating system-induced sleep mode when it is not used for an extended period of time.

After the user engages Windows "Sleep" mode and wakes the laptop, the webcam may give error messages such as "Locked by another application."

This webcam problem can be corrected by installing a Windows Hotfix, which is also included in Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1).
Webcam Problems After Upgrading Windows Vista

Toshiba Satellite laptop owners may opt to use the Microsoft Anytime Upgrade to upgrade to Vista Ultimate.

After doing so, the Chicony webcam may stop working and report a "Please turn on the camera" error message.

Users can correct this problem by reinstalling the Chicony driver.

Webcam Problems on Linux

Linux users who own Toshiba laptops with the Chicony webcam should install the Linux UVC Driver to make the webcam functional. The webcam may not work without this driver.

Grainy or Blurry Webcam Image

The Chicony webcam can produce grainy or blurry images if the user does not remove the protective film that covers the external webcam interface.

It might take some time being a freeware driver solution

note: it will find all of your outdated drivers

this is a free driver solutions

this will automatically search for and find the correct driver
you will have to update every driver individually once you update you might be asked whether you

want to restart or make a system restore point click no to both of these then continue updating each driver free then restart once all of the drivers have been updated

Some webcams and programs require additional software, although that should be installed with the webcam if things are right.
