Hi Ron, thanks for describe many valuable details. You suspect something wrong with the fluorescent tube, if it is true, shall be dark on top or bottom, not left or right, also the problem with the backlight the TV will shut off and the timer LED will blink 6 times.
I think there is the bad connection inside the panel or the t-con board, only think you can do is try to reconnect the wires under the aluminum foil (see the picture) or replace the panel.

I also have a 2 yr old Sony KDL32xbr4 that now has multi-colored vertical lines on the screen. I contacted Sony and they say they have "no known issue" of this sort for this model. I find this rather puzzling since I have found numerous postings on the web. They told me to try the factory reset. Whatever. Might as well have said "don't buy a Sony". 2 years! $1300 for a tv and it lasts 2 years! Makes me sick to my stomach.

If the problem is with the LCD display unit, Sony is now extending the warranty on the LCD display and will fix the problem for free through September 30, 2012. See: http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/news-item.pl?news_id=378&mdl=KDL46XBR4 Call their customer service number and they will give you a case number. Then call one of their authorized service centers and they will fix it free, in home.

I have a Sony KDL46XBR4 LCD that has a problem with the backlight. It is dark on 2/3 of the screen from the middle to the right side. After about 35 minutes the problem goes away.

You are getting the issue on a cold start which means the LCD Panel is bad. It is usually the inverters that cause the issue. They are what light up the panel. This problem was present in many of Sony's LCDs released around the same time as yours.

You can check the voltages to see if the inverter boards are functioning correctly. If Inverters should be replaced. Part numbers:
Inverter Left: 1-789-839-11
Inverter Right: 1-789-840-11

If the voltages are fine or the Inverters did not fix the issue, you need to replace the whole LCD panel which is very expensive. The part number depends on the serial number of your TV.

1-802-491-12 for
S/N 8,000,001 TO 8,199,199 AND 8,500,001 TO 8,599,999S/N

1-802-491-31 for
8,200,001 TO 8,499,999 AND 8,600,001 AND UP

The inverters list for $93.11 each while the LCD Panel lists for $1400 with a $3100 core charge.

This model of SONY TV uses a Samsung display panel, the problem you have is the panel went bad.

SONY was offering an extended warranty to change the panel free, please call SONY to check it out that if they still offer the free replacement.

Sony is replacing LCD Panels at no charge until October 31 2012. The KDL46XBR4 and KDL46XBR5. If you paid to repair they'll pay you the cash back you paid to repair it.

Easy $5 Fix with baby steps: Bad 25v 3300 capacitor on main back video connection board. Take the back off. Stand Tv up. Connect a video signal(dvd etc). Turn on tv to that input. Locate cap(brown on this Tv) behind right steel support bar. Heat up cap with blow dryer. Watch picture correct(not gradually, it will just pop in) itself. Now shut it down, unplug it, let it cool a bit. From the bottom, remove the #3 & 4 screws from right steel support bar. Just slightly tilt top of tv to release top of steel bar. Now you can pull it toward you and wiggle it off the bottom. The board the cap is on is a bit hard to remove.
Quick and easy cap removal: Note that the right side is negative and its printed on the board. Grab the cap with pliers and pull it out. Clean and trim the leads to 3/8 inch that are still attached to board. Trim new cap leads. Solder cap to leads. Bend cap side ways to clear steel support if necessary. Turn on Tv and find a beautiful picture. Now put it back together. You're done.
