E40 is a common fault relating to the door switch,how old is your machine because that model was first made in 2007 until the present so it may be worth your while getting in touch with your dealer or Electrolux.The problem is that if you get a fault on the door switch you may well replace it and find all is ok but the original door fault could have caused damage to the main Programmer.

e40 is a door lock problem

I've just bought one of these machines, and the manual says the E40 warning means the door is not properly closed. Seems like that would be obvious if it were true, but maybe check that it is closing completely.
