When i open the throttle a little, the speed increases but at full throttle, the power drops and I lose speed. Admittedly, I bought the C/Saw from a market 'as seen' and I found a few problems like broken choke linkage, which I repaired and the thing wouldn't start, so I adjusted the carb until it ran fairly well but this morning, I tried and it died! Help? Please?

Basics to check:

1) Spark plug - brown or dark brown - OK
a) is it carbon or fuel fouled
b) is there spark

2) Muffler remove for inspection
a) exhaust screen clean or plugged
b) inspect cylinder wall/piston as the flywheel is slowly rotated

3) Check cylinder compression

Fuel starvation - 'lean fuel' condition

Basic things to check:
1) spark plug
2) spark arrestor in muffler
3) fuel lines and tank filter
4) turn adjustment needles out (counterclockwise) 1/4 to 1/2 turn
Chain Saws:
5) check impulse tube and intake boot for cracks or leaks

*if all of the above are OK and/or do not improve performance then:
Remove Carburetor
6) replace gaskets/diaphragms
a) use a spray carb cleaner to clean jets, holes, and body of carb
b) fuel pump diaphragm goes against the carb body,
then the gasket towards the outside
c) metering gasket goes against the carb body,
and the diaphragm goes towards the outside

Sir, what is the starting adjustments on a Poluan 2000 Carb

Typical for any carburetor is 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 turns (out). These are just rough settings to get the saw running. Remove chain, turn idle throttle speed screw in to increase idle rpms so its less likely to stall. Follow mfg instructions for starting.

Once running, adjust low speed mix and allow a couple minutes to warm. Then re-adjust low speed and lower idle rpms by turning out idle throttle speed screw. Then with throttle wide open adjust high speed mix. If saw hesitates from idle to full throttle, open low speed mix 1/8 turn and readjust high speed mix.

If saw doesn't fire in 3 or 4 pulls remove plug. If plug is dry no fuel, if wet either no spark or idle mix to rich (or fuel metering may be fouled).

Saw starts runs good then when i start cutting it

Hi Jason:
Make and model might help but here's two ideas:
1) Remove muffler and clean it. They can get plugged up with carbon and the saw will run at low RPM but will quit because of excess back pressure when you try to rev it up.
2) Set the high and low speed carb settings. Start the saw then gradually increase engine speed until full throttle. Screw the hi-speed needle in slowly. If RPM immediately drops, back it out until Rpm increases, then starts to drop. Screw back in until peak rpm reached, then starts to drop. Back out to peak, then 1/3 turn more.
Set low speed so engine runs smoothly but chain does not turn.
Hope this helps.

What is the setting for the hi speed and low speed on the carb

Hi Darrell:
Here's what I was taught.
- Wear hearing protection.
- Start saw.
- Adjust low speed screw... turn in slowly until engine falters, then back out a bit until engine sounds happy.
- Place screw driver in high speed screw, apply full throttle, adjust high speed..... turn in ... rpm shoud increase, ten drop off... back screw out until maximum rpm, then a tiny bit more to make sure the mixture is not too lean.
- Chain saw should now be happy.

Why does homelite chainsaw runs wide open?

if your saying your saw runs full speed as soon as it starts , one of two things is happening :
(1) your low speed carb jet is too far open
(2) your throttle trigger has disconnected or become stuck from your carburetor and now the throttle blade inside carb is full open

Messed up carburetor

Start out with both screws at 1-1/2 run saw full throttle and adj. screw closest to air filter, which should be "H" screw it in slowly till you reach max rpm's then reverese the screw just till it starts to slow down, keep in mind don't take forever to do this cause you don't want it running lean (max rpm's) because it will COOK in no time! After you have the high speed set let saw Idle, then accelerate quickly, if it bogs turn the "L"" clockwise little at a time reving it each time, till you get the bog worked, then when acceleration sounds quite responsive then go back to H speed and readjust it, open it up some and run it wide open and readadjust H speed to where it just drops off on rpms on the rich side not lean side, righty (leany)...Lefty Richy ! Good luck

My 350 will not stay running. It die when i hit the trigger. I changed all filterss and plugs. If I take off the air filter and use my thumb to open and close the air flow over the carb it will work.

Assuming the carb isn't contaminated with debris I would check / reset the carb settings.
Lightly seat the low and high speed screws and back them out 1 1/4 turns. Try so start saw...if it starts and will idle then let the saw warm up. If it won't start then Back the low speed screw out 1/4 turn...try again. Once the saw is warm then set the idle screw so the chain just stops rotating. Adjust the low speed screw inwards and listen for the rpm to increase as you do...keep going until it starts to drop in rpm....back the screw out until rpms have peaked and back the screw a bit more past that...less than 1/4 turn. Try to work the throttle and tweak the low speed screw until the saw revs crisply...readjust idle speed. Apply full throttle and turn the high speed screw in until you hear the saw "sing"....it will get very smooth and the rpms will increase. DO NOT leave the screw at this setting as it is running very lean and will burn up in short order. Back the screw out until you hear the saw tone "roughen"...the revs will drop a bit and the smoothness in the exhaust tone will disappear. Back the screw out a bit more past the point where the saw tone start to roughen....this will make sure there is sufficient fuel when the saw starts to actually cut.
If none of this works for your saw I would suspect the carb needs to be cleaned / kitted. Also doublecheck that there are no air leaks between the carb and cylinder. Air leaks could be caused by bad gaskets and or loose mounting fasteners.

Will not operate with choke full open

It sounds more like the high speed jet needs to be opened. No engine will run with the choke on. Open it up, find the little screw labeled high or fast, you have 2, one low or slow, If opening it up doesn't work, try closing it, turn it a very little bit at a time to see what it does. Hope this helps.

When engaging mower blades speed drops or stops

Check throttle cable at carb and make sure you have full travel. Sounds like rpm is little to low. Throttle cables are usually held in place with 1 screw and a washer. Put cable at full throttle loosen screwand pull back until throttle at carb in at full then tighten screw.

Trigger on poulan 3314 does not control speed. Saw runs at constant speed, somewhere above fast idle.

Open the cover over the air cleaner so that you can observe the action of the throttle cable and carburetor lever. Operate the throttle--normal action is lever wide open at full throttle and lever resting on idle stop screw when throttle released. If action is restricted, disassemble the handle where the throttle trigger is located and clean out the sawdust. Recheck throttle action. The throttle cable shouldn't require lubrication. Clean the air filter and check the operation of the engine. Hope this helps!
