I used to have a PC and now I have a Macbook and when I connected my hard drive, it says it is read only and I cannot make any changes. How can I change this?

Your Mac can read a PC formatted drive, but it cannot write to it.
You need to "format" the drive so the Mac can write to it. That will wipe the data, so you need to save what you want to save first, and then treat your drive like it was new.

Hi, guys. Just received your Iomega eGo Helium 500 GB external hard drive and successfully backed up the HD on my MacBook Pro. My question is whether your HD can be formatted/configured so I can also...

Yes all external drives can be formatted but formatting will always wipe off everything on it. If you want to format it you can right click on it when it appears in Windows Explorer. You are usually offered the choice of file system FAT or NTFS. FAT is limited to a file size of about 4 GB, so usually choose NTFS, I am presuming you are talking Windows system. Then you would have to copy your files to it once again.

My iomega professional hard drive (500gb) that I bought last year won't work on my new computer. It shows up under devices but I can't save anything to it. It worked fine on my macbook, but I now have a...

I would try recommending formatting the drive this will take everything on it off. However it probably needs to be reformatted to ntfs. On the right in the disk management you should be able to see how it is formatted. For xp and up to need that to be ntfs

I bought this because the Apple store recommended it so that I could store a music collection off of my MacBook. What is the best way to do that so that I can free up space on my hard drive and still have...

The "BEST" way to use any "external" device is to create one MORE copy of all your important files. If your MacBook dies, you have a copy of your files.
Or, if the external device dies, your MacBook still has a copy of your files. Safe!

The "WORST" way would be to copy your files to it *AND* delete the files from your Macbook,
and then to have the external device "die", killing the ONLY copy of your files. Ouch!

Doesn't work

am not so sure if this is a similar issue with iomega2_bing.gif external drive in which the drive wont show up on My Computer but when the external drive was plugged into an ubuntu machine the drive was being detected and working just fine.

Please try to do the same. plug your external drive to an ubuntu machine and lets see if it can be detected. If it is then the hard disk has a similar issue with iomega drives. check this link for the solution.

Transfering photos to my Iomega Prestige 500GB Portable Hard Driv

Does the Iomega show up under 'my computer'?
It should be another drive (D, E, F whatever) and as such you put stuff on to it the same way you would put stuff on to your C drive.

Hi, i have an iomega 500 gb external drive, used it on my macbook (osx) and acer (vista) laptop without any problems, till this morning when not the mac nor pc recognize it, i tried different usb cables so...

If the power LED is on, it points to a problem with either the disk itself or the housing circuit board. I would open the case up to see what sort of hard drive it is (IDE or SATA) and then get as cheap hard drive housing from Maplin or similar to put the disk into.
