My camcorder has thick grey horizontal lines across the screen when i record and whenit plays back. i bought a head cleaner tape for it but it's still there what do i do? I have only used this camera maybe 10 times.

Canon support was of no help. They ****! To fix the problem this is what I figured out.
How did I figure this out just a fluke. No cleaning, no spray pretty simple. At first did not understand it but it works EVERYTIME for me. I'll deal with it until I get around to buying a new HD video camera and it won't be a Canon. Hope this helps.

it worked for me too, thanks very much. I hadn't played back anything since I bought the camcorder, now I've been able to transfer it all to a laptop without grey stripes.

I had exactly the same problem. Recent recording. Tried to play back a week later, and solid grey horizontal lines symmetrically spaced and intermittent distorted audio. This has to be a tape head alignment / read error.
What did not work:
1) taking battery in and out
2) winding tape backwards and forwards x2.
3) fast forward in play
4) taking in out x6
5) playing around with camera settings such as 12 /16 bit audio.
What did work:
Putting in brand new tape and recording a few minutes. Play back of this tape worked fine. Subsequently trying the old tape worked fine to.
This did in fact work I only had to go through step 2 though. I had to go to this fix as a result of having performed another set of steps for my intial problem the fact that the tape would only load into the yoke mechnism but not stay in the camera long enough to engage and close the door. That probelm was amazingly fixed by using the tap method found also on this same site. The fix for this problem unfortunately discovered Christmas morning and the fix was to place the camaa LCD screenside down in your palm and tapping the opposite side 3 times.
Rube Goldberg would be proud of you problem solvers. These fixes are so ridulous on first glance that you'd swear they could never have possibly worked but they did both times.... Just imagine what we all dd before the internet..... Pay Canon dollars

Ok, I've figured my one out. Funny thing was, a cleaning tape didn't help at all, but when I took the battery out (to save frying the camera) and sprayed electronic component cleaner directly into the area where the tape goes and let it dry, the camera worked properly after.
You could check the settings to see if you have accidentally changed something.
My cannon miniDV also shows gray lines. When i would put a cassette in the camcorder sometimes it wouldn't let me do anything and would say eject disk. I looked on YouTube and saw how to clean the head with alcohol and a q-tip then let it dry for about 10 min. My head was filthy so it needed it but gray lines remain. I was also told that I may need to demagnetize my head so I bought a demagnetizer to try it out from eBay. Just Plugged it in and placed it on the head for 1 sec no success, i tried it again for 10sec according to another post, no success. I finally found another solution to try. I just forwarded to the end of the cassette where I had nothing recorded, I left the camera lens on and recorded for about 7 min. Guess what, it worked! I thought I was going to have to throw this camera away but nope! I suggest keep trying and one of these options should fix it! Cleaning the head may have fixed the eject disk but the recording with the lens on and in a quiet room fixed the gray lines!
Sometimes just taking the battery out and put it back works like a charm.

I sprayed out my camera but the grey lines remain. Is there something else I can try other than taking it to a shop? I hesitate to pay 1/2 the price of a new camera...

We have a canon camcorder NTSC ZR 200 and we also have thick grey horizontal lines on recording and playback. We've tried using new tapes and re-winding to no avail. Any advice on how to rectify the problem?
Same here. Left it sitting for a few months, went to use it and everything has grey stripes across it (not in the viewer when recording, but definitely there during playback) - even stuff that didn't have it before. Transferred video to my computer and the stripes were transferred, too.

Same exact problem. Screen is clear until you play back recording - then gray lines appear. Any more suggestions?
grey lines during play back. can zoom in and out to make the grey lines bigger and smaller but a cleaning tape blown air nothings helping don't think I should have to pay $157 dollars, what they want to fix this. there
are horizonal grey lines.
