SOURCE: Setup DIR-655 w/ Westell 6100 USB DSL Modem

First check if your computer can get on the modem with an Ethernet ( This is to find out if your router will work with your modem) If you cannot get on give your ISP a call to have them configure the modem for Ethernet connection. If you do get on then connect the router to the modem and your computer to the router. You can run the CD for the router or do the connection manually.

SOURCE: Really unstable Dlink dir-655 router

I would suggest you try to change the channel to a higher one and this solves this problem most of the times...You need to go to your router configuration to do that usually by opening a browser and type 192.168 ... and log in into your router...Hope this helps.

SOURCE: My DIR-655 won't work!

It would be helpful if you could be a bit more specific regarding the way you hooked up the dir 655 to your network and your specifc DSL modem. If the modem you are using is the Actiontec M1000 DSL modem you will not be able to obtain internet access because the DIR 655 is trying to route an already routed IP, the M1000 has a built in router / DHCP that by default is enabled. You can use option 1, access the configuration settings of your M1000 and change the WAN configuration to act as a transparent bridge. After doing so and rebooting the modem you will have to enter your DSL login information like a PPPoE username and password for example into your DIR 655 network settings. With this configuration the modem simply acts as a bridge to relay data directly to the DIR 655 and the 655 itself provides login credentials to obtain internet from your DSL provider as well as hand out IP addresses to the local network. Option 2 is to continue to use the M1000 as a router by default and disable DHCP on your DIR 655 so that it essentially acts as nothing more than a switch or wireless access point while the M1000 hands out local IP addresses. I personally would recommend using the DIR 655 to route IP's as it's got far more configuration utilities than the M1000 does as a router, and really what's the point of getting the 655 if you're only going to use it as a switch or access point when there are other simpler and cheaper devices that could do that for you.

SOURCE: Problem connecting to VPN (PPtP) via DIR-655

pimrakers

Since it work when directly connected to your modem then most likely it is an IP issue. With VPN you router can not be in the same subnet as the one you are connecting too. So alot of places do not change the IP's the equipment unless they have to you just got lucky and a router with the same default settings. If you change the IP address then you should be able to connect. Note you should only have to worry about the last 2 number sets. Example if your routers IP is 192.168.1.1 then I would change it to 192.168.5.1. Just remember what you changed it to. Also you can use any number between 1 and 254.

Let me know if you have any more problems or questions.

How do I change the NAT setting to open?

Hello and welcome to FixYa.

My guess is that you are looking for port forwarding (eg: port 80 to host a webserver, or maybe a utorrent port for torrent downloads).

These are my suggestions for this issue in general (Assuming you first logged in to your router administration panel. Usually located @ address 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.254 depending on manufacturer can be located underneath the router on a sticker, along with the default admin console password and username):

1. Please enable UPnP to set NAT to open.
2. Goto the port forwarding section (might also be called Virtual server section etc.) and do a port forward using the IP of the computer you need to open port to, with TCP port 80 or 8080 or utorrent port or the number of the port you may need in general.

Please tell me how much did that help you.

More info on this matter that might be helpful can be found==> here

Thanks.

HN9000 won't pass remote services

On the Router check if you have UPnP enabled, if yes then Disabel it that should fix the NAT issue and then you need to open the port number 1723,3389. Once these ports are opened then you will be able to access it on the VPN and Remote Desktop Provided you have a WAN IP Address from your ISP. also check the Firmware of the router if its updated or not.

Unable to ftp from outside of the network. Went through all of the port forwarding setup. Still can't connect.

You need to setup a Port Forwarding / Virtual Server (FTP) in the router to forward port 21 (FTP default) to your FTP server's FTP port. You may need to setup a reserved IP address for the FTP server first in the router before the option comes up.

How do I set my Netgear FVL328 to be a switch for my network? I have a Dlink DIR-655 connected to my cable modem. But I don't have enough ports for all of my devices. So I connected the Netgear FVL328...

If I understand, the D-link is a switch but you don't have enough ports so you want to use the Netgear to get additional ports.
The way to do it is to use one of the Netgear Lan ports to connect to one of the D-link ports, then use the remaining Netgear ports for your stuff, leaving the WAN port disconnected.
Personally I would use the Netgear as a firewall and connect the D-link to get the additional ports.
Also, Apparently the Netgear and the cable modem or D-link are both running DHCP servers to assign IP addresses to connected devices that need one assigned. You should turn the DHCP server off in whatever unit is being used in a slave fashion. This is done in the netgear by opening a browser and typing in the IP address for the netgear, which is probably 192.168.1.1, and logging in using username 'admin' and password 'password' unless you changed them.

Configure the firewall

You can use the Virtual Server to forward an individual port to one of your computers. You cannot forward the same port to multiple computers. In order to configure the Virtual Server you need to know the IP address of the computer that needs the port opened and the service port number. The links below will help you find the IP address of your machine. If you don?t know which port needs to be opened, try checking the software manufacture?s support website for information on use behind firewall. Configuring the Virtual Server: Step 1 Access the device configuration by entering 192.168.0.1 in your web browser. Login with your username and password. The default username is admin and the password is blank. Step 2a If the port you need to forward is a common port, it will be under the predefined virtual server list at the bottom of the page. Click the pad and paper icon next to the virtual server entry you want to use. The Protocol Type and Service Port fields are preconfigured. Click the Enable radio button to use the virtual server. Enter the private IP address of the computer that will use the service port. Configure the Schedule as needed, then Apply your settings. Step 2b If the port you need to forward is not listed under the predefined virtual server list at the bottom of the page, you can create a new entry for your application. Click the Enable radio button to use the virtual server. Give your virtual server a name. Next, enter the private IP address of the computer that will use the service port. Then, select the Protocol Type and enter the Service Port. If you don?t know how to use Private and Public port assignment, then just enter the same port number in both fields. Configure the Schedule as needed and Apply your settings.
