Go to http://techdocs.shimano.com/techdocs/index.jsp

Search in drop down list to go to all tiagra items and identify your particular components. Shimano are good at numbering their parts and you should find the number you seek on the bicycle component. You will usually be able to download an exploded parts diagram and service instructions. The service instructions are prefixed by the letters SI.

I have a 9 speed 12-25 shimano tiagra cassette. I want a gear that is lower than 25 and want to keep the 25. Can I remove the 14 and add a 26 or 27

NO. It's prohibitively expensive to swap individual cogs on cassettes and the ends are fixed anyway.

Look at this picture http://shimano105.com/2779/shimano-cassette-9-speed/

The largest 3 cogs are riveted together as are the next 2 cogs.

Cassettes can have up to 34-tooth low gears. 12x27 is a common size. Mountain bike sizing is next and it involves someothing more like 11x32 or 34.

Your rear derailleur, if it's a short-cage, may not be able to handle a much larger cog. Do some online research for the largest cog it can accomodate.

You don't say what size chainrings (or how many) you have. Compact cranksets run 50x34 or 36 up front, which makes a huge difference if you're coming from a 52x42 or 52x39 setup. I converted one of my bikes to compact and it's my favorite hilly-ride bike now.

Consult a bike shop because some special tools and skills are required. And web search for 'how to' just about anything.

I need to find a explosive view shimano tiagra shifters but not the one on the shimano website. I need to rebuild them from scratch.

This is very difficult to find, if not near impossible. The one on Shimano's site is the best detail there is available to the general public.

The Tiagra STI shifters and all Shimano Shifters are not specifically designed to be rebuilt and are very difficult to put back together, I do not recommend it. You can do some basic disassembly and reassembly but a complete rebuild is very, very tricky. Some of the internal gear parts are not designed to come apart and go back together with standard tools.

What is the problem with your shifter that makes you want to rebuild? I would be happy to help you diagnosis the problem before you destroy the lever.

With Shimano 6603 Group can you use Shimano 5703 shifters, or even triple Tiagra shifters?? Thanks for the reply

The answer is yes and no.

The 5703 shifters will work both derailleurs and match the 6603 group as they are both 10spd.

The Tiagra will not work because it is 9spd, it will functionally shift the derailluer but you will not be able to line up the gearing.

The rear shifter needs to match the number of gears on the back (cassette) in the case of the 6603 group that is 10spd, so you can use any 10spd rear shifter from shimano. The Tiagra is either an 8spd or 9spd depending on the model and will not work with the cassette. You can use a 6603 rear derailleur with a Tiagra group, as long as the shifter and cassette are both the same.

Hi, Just bought a new bike with shimano tiagra gearing. However the gear shifters doesn't seem to work. There is no movement in the cables when I try to shift gears. Do you have any idea for a quick fix or...

You don't mention which shifter(s) malfunction or if you're even pedaling the bike while shifting (I make NO assumptions).

If you operate the inner shift lever (NOT the brake lever) on each side through several clicks that should RELAX any tension in the shifter cables. Then if you pick the bike up and pedal it forward a couple of turns the front shifter should drop the chain the the lowest chainring and the rear derailleur should shift out the the smallest cog.

With the bike suspended (say, hanging from a low tree branch by the tip of the seat) you should be able to turn the cranks and manually pull sideways on either exposed shifter cable where it runs down along the downtube then release it.

This should cycle each respective derailleur through its entire range. If the cables don't travel sufficiently in this manner, the shifters will never make them do it either.

Perhaps you could CALL the Bike Shop and they would talk you through a quick operational check.

Choosing bike's gearshifter

You must replace your shifter with one that is the same type, that is, if it is a six-speed shifter, you must replace it with a six-speed shifter. Also, if you have a Shimano derailleur, then the shifter you get must be a compatible type. Shimano uses a 2:1 actuation ratio, so you have to use a Shimano shifter or a SRAM 2:1 shifter (Attack, Centera or MRX models).
The only stupid questions are the ones we don't ask, friend. Look on eBay under bicycles for "6-speed shifter" and you will be able to find some really good deals.
When it comes time to work on your bike, go to Park Tool's website (parktool.com) and on the top right corner is a "Repair Help" link. You can select your topic by highlighting the part in question on the bike.

Hope this helps,
matt
