Error message carriage jam and/or paper jam

Unit is less than 2 months old, error message alternates between "clear paper jam" and "carriage jam". There is no paper jam and never was one. As for the carriage, it is stuck and will not center aligned when door is open. What is up with this and how can I fix it? I have already tried unplug, replug and reinstall printer. Please help.

I've diagnosed the problem for my phantom carriage jam, the issue is in a small gear assembly to the right and below the ink cartridge maintenance tray. There are three plastic gears in this assembly that drives the paper feed and the ink cartridge maintenance tray. The black plastic driven gear in the middle that the metal drive shaft attaches to has a split in it allowing the shaft to split, this consequently does not move the paper feed and this comes us as a carriage jam.

This foreign page details the failure: http://www.istorya.net/forums/computers-and-accessories-59/544066-gear-set-hp-photosmart-c5500-series-hp-c5580.html

Here's a foreign video about it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4PCUmouo0-E

This is the small gear:
https://www.google.com/search?q=hp+photosmart+c5580+carriage+jam+gear&espv=2&biw=1920&bih=955&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0CAgQ_AUoA2oVChMIw-_uhcmhxwIVDpaICh0ccwiC#imgrc=u1by5ja5gYX_jM%3A

The gearbox just pulls off the shaft and is disassembled be removing the small metal clip and unhooking the catches on the side. I've fixed my split gear by turning a groove into the small gear on a lathe and gluing in an aluminum ring to stop the crack opening up.

Error message= open door clear carriage jam and

I think the message is instructions, as in
(1) open door (2) clear carriage jam (3) press enter
So there is something internal to the printer that makes it think it has a carriage jam, piece of paper under a sensor, dirty or stuck sensor.
If you can't find it using a bright light, try canned air.

Error message 6a00 showing on screen orange and green lights flashing checked to see if any paper jammed but it is clear

The 6A00 is a Canon generic code for paper path jam.

Solution 1:
Move the printhead carriage back and forth a few times.

Solution 2:
Check the purge unit: Moving the print head assembly will not clear a purge unit if its jammed with paper, paper clips, push pins, screws, cookie crisp, flower bud pods or the like.

Solution 3:
Press the ink pads down in the purge unit.

How do I get fix a "carriage jam"?

I was able to run run a piece of photo paper through a couple of times and printer now seems to be working again. The theory was that running a heavy piece of paper through might help clear little piece of paper that was not visible. The photo paper is less likely to tear if it gets jammed too.
