I had the same problem - then the motor went shortly afterwards. time to by a new one - frustrating because I've only had it for a couple of years.
If it is getting hot enough to melt the electric cord and the extension cord, get rid of it. The over-heating is most likely from the brushes in the motor, which means, unless you are a licensed electrician or know one, the unit should be scrapped. Replacement parts for these electric blowers are priced such that it is cheaper to buy a enw one than to fix the old one.
