Hi,
When poeple create software, they test it in order to discover programming errors, and all sorts of unusual conditions that may make the software misbehave. For every error found they design a customized message to let you the user know what happened and what you can do to salvage your work.
Error conditions may also be created by the user and the input he/she gave the software. In the testing phase, the testers try to think of all possible data (good and garbage) that the user may enter and design a message if the input leads to a software misbehavior.
But programmers and testers are not omnicient and sometimes they miss errors conditions. For all these, there is message telling you that an unknown error happened.
You may reduce the number of such occurences by familiarizing yourself with the software and its use.
Hope it helps.
