Re: Not sayinstreet names.
After you turn on your unit touch the wrench icon in the bottom right of the screen, this will take you to a menu which features "Settings" in the upper left of the screen. Touch "settings" and scroll down to "language" by using the up and down buttons in the lower right of the screen (down 1 should do it). Touch "Language" and in the voice category find and select "American English - Jill (TTS)". This is the voice that will give you Text To Speech (TTS) speaking the street names in English. If you prefer Spanish or French, find the appropriate catergories with "(TTS)" beside them - "Espanol Americas - Paulina (TTS)" and "Francais Canadien - Julie (TTS)" respectively. Any other selection will only give directional instructions such as "turn left in XXX".
After you have selected your voice press "OK" and back out to your main menu showing "Where to?" and View Map".
Now, when you navigate, you should hear an American female voice giving you directions by street name - assuming your volume is high enough to hear it.
RE: The computer icon displaying when you try to use your unit in the car with the 12 VDC cord.
You probably have a problem with the cord. The pin length in the USB style connector is critical and if it doesn't match up just right the GPS thinks it is hooked up to a computer. If you know someone who has a Garmin NUVI try using their cord and see if you have the same problem. Either way, call Garmin and see if they will send you a replacement cord or otherwise help fix the problem.
When I power up my garmin 260w in the car it go's into charge. A Little computer comes on the screen and it will not let me view anything. When I pull the power cord off the unit powers up and works great with the battery. It does it on my computer at home also. Whats the story with this unit.
Please help
Wally
Regarding 260 not saying street names, you might have turned the volume right down. Hit Volume icon, and then increase the volume. Let us know if that fixes your problem.
You need to register register your unit and get an unlock code from Garmin. Go to Garmin website where you registered mapsource and then add your Nuvi 260 for addition unlock code.

You do not give very much information to go on.
Perhaps you have downloaded some data such as routing or some other details from your computer via "MapSource". If so AND you have a mini SD card in the GPS, you have overwritten the SD card with the data from MapSource ...the map data on the SD card is now gone!
But the MapSource Data remains.
If you have copied the original data on the SD card, just copy and paste to re-place it.
If NOT you will need to contact Garmin to get a new SD data card.
What you have to do to prevent this in the future is to temporarily remove the Data Card from the Garmin GPS, then download the MapSource data from your computer. Then the MapSource Data goes to the GPS on-board memory.
well you need to update the firmware of your gps also call garmin customer support they are great tell them about the map, also the poor satelite cover might be because of your location or weather conditions
Vista only recognize gmapsupp.img files.Go to www.mapwel.biz/down.htm take MapUpload software then from mapsource select maps you want to transfer to sd card.Or directly from Mapsource select Transfer and send selected map to sd card.Maps must be unlocked.
I have found that waypoints, routes and directions work only when I load it on the unit itself as opposed to the SD card. The SD card works more like an expansion slot for pictures or maps.
When you open up Mapsource you'll see the map on the right and the pane on the left, above the pane there are 4 tabs (Maps, Waypoints, Routes and Tracks). As you select a map or create a waypoint, route or track. It will put a number in parenthesis which will increase in numbers as you add an item corresponding to each category, for example if you create a waypoint. So once you have done that, click on the TRANSFER tab in the Menu selection bar and choose SEND TO DEVICE. A window will pop up that will say...Device: with a drop down menu if your Garmin unit has an SD card in it, if not it will just show the Garmin unit. Then right below that there will be a section that says WHAT TO SEND with 4 check boxes that will say Maps, Waypoints, Routes and Tracks. Make sure that you have selected the Garmin unit, not the SD, and the waypoints, routes or tracks you want to send. I hope this solves your problem or at least points you in the right direction...
Each map is locked to the unit serial number. The only way to get the map to work on another unit is to buy the maps and register the map serial number and you will receive a unlock code from garmin.
The new maps will be unlocked to your GPS using the code Garmin supplied you.
You will have to add these maps to a second SD card if your present card is full, or else purchase a larger card. Since all the Mapsource NT 2008 Europe maps are 1,395MB in size, you'll need to purchase at least a 2GB SD card.
You cannot replace American maps with European maps. Garmin does this in order to protect the European retailers. The European SD card eliminates the need to load the maps into the 660, however, if you need to use the card slot to store extra data such as MP3s then you might be better off buying the 670.
Verify that you have the correct basemap for the country that you are in. There are two maps inside a new Garmin. The basemap which shows all the major highways and mapsource which shows all the street. If you don't have the correct basemap try changing 'Navigation' Advoidance to avoid highways and Toll Roads.
