I get a message that says "Waste Ink Near Full".

3 choices are available. Take it in for service(expensive), try to clean waste ink pad yourself(messy) or try this reset yourself. It works on many different models and may be your answer.

I have been running my printer for approximately 2 years since resetting mine without a problem.

There is an error message which says: waste ink near full what do I do next?

The printer will still work just fine, but the message will not go away. Changing the tank is a messy job and canon willtell you to take the printer to a service center. The following has worked to remove the message on my pc. Sorry, I'm not aware of the tank or pad cleaning procedure, but this should help with the message removal.
