My 40 inch Samsung LCD TV was working fine then began flashing from snow to a black screen to a BARELY visible, distorted picture. Swapped cable box and still have an issue. The component video is working for my DVD player. Could the HDMI input be shot? Maybe the HDMI Cable itself?

Sounds like the backlight or backlight inverter is out on your TV.
You will likely want a seasoned professional to repair this for you assuming the TV is out of warranty.
This does not seem to be a power supply issue but rather an issue with the backlight inverter board. When the screen goes black, take a flash light and focus it on the screen from a close distance and several angles. See if you notice a very faint image. Try changing the channels to make it more noticeable. Try it and let me know
Dude, better check your cable and also your TV's power management settings. This might also happen due a issue with the HDMI output of the satellite box.
If you are using a set top box this might be caused by turnig the box on at the same tie as you turn the tv on or slightly after you turn the tv on. If you are using compnent or HDMI inputs the set needs to see the signal as it is turned on to know what formt the signal is in.
