I have camera connected through USB, but it is not being recognised as a device. On previous occasions when I have been able to connect my camera, I cannot download directly to iPhoto, as it is not listed as an application, even though I can access it for other uses.
I suggest your download the Macam software and your camera will be detected. Please click on the below link for more information and to download the macam.

Consider NOT connecting your camera to your computer.
The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.
Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program, such as iPhoto or Nikon Transfer.
Click here to download iPhoto 8.1
Double-click the .DMG file to open it up. Another new icon with a name similar to the .DMG file will appear on your desktop
You need a USB cable.
Most miniDV cameras that take stills will have a small USB socket on the camera. These vary according to model.
There is mini USB as well as Micro USB and other proprietary sockets.
Usually the camera is supplied with the camera.
When the camera is connected to a Mac iPhoto should open automatically to transfer the photos.
I am not sure if I can help but what I would suggest is first of all disconnect the camera from the mac and then if you have iphoto go to preferences and make sure that iphoto is the application that is activated when the camera is plugged in. Then close the preferences. Now connect the camera to your mac. If you do not have iphoto you can use image capture which is in the applications folder. Hope this helps.

Usually iPhoto can handle most cameras to import photos. If your Mac
doesn't have iPhoto, which is now part of iLife, you should be able to
plug the camera in via the USB port and it will show up on your desktop
as another storage device. You can drag the images from there and use
Preview to view and even edit them.
Does the camera show up on your desktop when you connect it? If so, just launch iPhoto. Inside iPhoto preferences, check the one that causes iPhoto to launch whenever you attach a camera, and you won't run into this behavior in the future. If the camera does not show up on your desktop, or in System Profile's USB column, then you have a bad USB cable or a bad USB port either on the camera or on your Mac.
I had the same problem with my camera & mac. I got this off the Fuji site and it worked for me:
If images cannot be downloaded from the camera to a Macintosh, check the status of the camera and the Macintosh and resolve the problem accordingly.
1) Check the status of the camera and Macintosh. 1. Connect your camera to the Macintosh and turn the camera on. 2. Open the "Applications" folder on the Macintosh HD. 3. Double-click "Image Capture". * If the "Imaging device not connected" message appears, follow the steps described in [Checking the connection between the camera and PC]. 4. Select "Preferences" from the "Image Capture" menu. 5. The procedure for using the Image Capture Preferences window differs depending on the OS version used. Use the correct procedure for your version of Mac OS. - Mac OS 10.4: Click "General" in the Image Capture Preferences window. - Mac OS 10.3: Click "Camera" in the Image Capture Preferences window. - Mac OS 10.2: Simply proceed to the next step. 6. In "Items launched at camera connection", select "FPVBridge" and then click the [OK] button. * If FPVBridge is not among the displayed items, follow the steps in [Displaying FPVBridge] below. 7. Quit "Image Capture".
If you implement the above procedure up to step 6, FinePix Viewer launches automatically. * To stop FinePix Viewer from launching automatically, follow the steps in [FinePix Viewer Setup] below.
O.K. I just answered this and accidentally closed the screen before sending but I'll just type it again......
on mac computers simply plugging in a camera will not necessarily do anything you must have an application in place to use that device such as iphoto which comes in ilife a pre installed software since around 2005 on new macs also on mac os x in the applications folder is a application called image capture you can simply open either of them then plug the camera in and it should be ready for import although on the older iphoto it could take a minute also in iphoto if you select the iphoto drop down menu at the top left of the screen and select preferences or press the "apple" and "," key at the same time (that will also open the preference window) select the general tab at the top left and look near the bottom where it says "connecting camera opens" in the drop down box next to it select iphoto then close the window with the little red ball at the upper left and you should be all set
But if all else fails you can download the software here

Even though Sony Mavica digital cameras are listed as compatible with iPhoto, the camera has to be set to Picture-Transfer-Protocol (PTP) before you can download. In addition, you will need to open Image Capture in the Applications folder. As soon as these steps are taken, the camera is recognized by iPhoto and all photos downloaded into Image Capture.
