It sounds like the compressor insides are loose and you will be needing a new compressor, but just check and make sure the rubber mounting feet on the outer compressor base where its mounted to the refrigerator base are all tight and the rubber shocks are all good

The clunking sound that it make's when the compressor shuts off is bad motor mounts / and may be the internal also . this would also cause the loud running sounds . if it starts every 10 min it may be short cycleing . ( clean the coil's and make sure the fan in back is coling the unit .. and make sure you replace the back when your done .. mm

Have Kenmore Model 60284991. It runs all the time and when it shuts off, it makes a very loud clunking noise. Trying to decide whether to repair or buy new - this model was manufactured in 2000 and we...

The unit is running all the time bacause it is loosing freon. It is trying to keep it down to the set temp. The clunking noise is caused by lowe pressure in the compressor. You can have it repaired for under $350 if you get the right company out. I would personally recomend replacing it though, if you had one leak, you will have more.

Compressor is making very loud clunk when shutting off.

I think the wire was kinda expensive. If I were you I would try to save the fridge. I think you should unplug it for a couple hours, take everything out for a while and remove any ice. Once the fridge reached room temp, the refrigerant should have made its way back to the compressor. Plug it back in and see if it makes the noise again.
It might just be the fan in the freezer. I would try the unplug/deice for a few hour method first because it is free before you try to replace a fan that might be bumping ice. Good luck!

After the compressor runs it makes a loud clunking sound when it stops running. The sound comes from the compressor.

My guess is that it is running on high head probably caused by a dirty condenser. Try cleaning that. The noise itself is the actual compressor and motor bouncing around inside the hermetic can (what you call the compressor).
Good Luck

Refrigerator makes fairly loud noises of a clunking kind but runs and stays cold.

Clunking noises usually comes from the rapid stop of the compressor. It will not hurt a thing. The rubber grommets which the compressor sit on for cushioning, have most likely hardened and are transferring the noise to the frame or casing. The compressor runs at 3600 rpm's and when you tell it to stop on a dime, it can't. The result is a couple of clunks or so. Also check the drip pan for improper positioning. I have seen them make noise also.

Kenmore top freezer fridge does not cool but freezer works

Turned refrigerator off for 8 hours, let the frost melt and the fan in the freezer worked again. The compressor now only has a soft clunk when it goes off.
