Canon PowerShot A80 - no display through the lens

My Canon PowerShot A80 worked flawlessly for years, including last Friday. Last Saturday it didn't. Not dropped or any event. Picture on CF card displays. No display through the lens. Icons display. Lens opens and retracts normally. Always wants to shoot at 1/60 with flash regardless of conditions. Flash goes off, no image records. Any ideas?

Will only work with 1.5V battery output instead of 1.2V

How old are the rechargeables? Also, am assuming you are using NiMH and not the inferior low-power NiCads. Rechargeables NiMH really aren't meant to last more than a year or two, regardless of how often they were recharged. If the batteries are older than a year, suggest trying a new set.

E18 displayed on Powershot Canon A80

Lens errors (aka E18 errors for Canons) are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...

Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try:

Sorry to hear that. I have an A80 also, and I really like that camera (swear it takes better pictures than even my A620).
