I have a Garmin 396 that I use for aviation navigation. The 396 just suddenly became unable to find the satelites and therefore will not function. I tried to rebook by unplugging the battery for a couple of minutes, but that didn't work. also check the antena hook up. Do you have any suggestions

I recommend either resetting the device or update the software. You can find software downloDepending on which model of Garmin GPS unit you’re using, thefollowing routine can reset the Garmin device to original factoryloaded settings, or bring up the Maintenance Mode with access to SystemInformation and View Diagnostics screen, where users can see variouslogs, and of course, clear all user data (reset to factory defaults) orclear Waypoints.
In order to reset Garmin device or enter into maintenance mode, perform one of the following procedures:
Power off Garmin unit. Press on continuously the uppertop left corner of screen and then power on the unit by pressing onceon the Power button. You should be prompted to clear all user data, orasked if do you really want to start up in maintenance mode. Press“Yes” to reset (warning: all data will be erased and lost,so backup before proceeding) or enter maintenance mode.
Hack above works on Garmin Nuvi 660, 680 series.
Turn off Garmin device. Press down on bottom rightcorner of the touchscreen, and then power on the GPS unit. You shouldbe prompted whether do you really want to erase all user data, or askedif do you really want to start up in maintenance mode. Press“Yes” to reset (warning: all data will be erased and lost,so backup before proceeding) or enter maintenance mode.
Trick above works on Garmin nuvi 200, 250, 360 750, 760 series unit.In fact, there is a video demo by user of Garmin Nuvi 360 on how toperform the hidden reset function.

Note: If entering maintenance mode, it’s also possible to perform master reset by selecting clear user data option.
Once the device has been hard reset, user have to perform the set upprocedure again upon start up. Note that erase user data command onlydelete data in the Garmin unit’s memory that isn’taccessible to the user when the unit is connected to computer. Thecommand does not erase .gpi or .gpx files loaded (if your .gpx filescontain any waypoints then they will automatically be imported intoFavorites), nor will delete any MP3 music, JPG photos or any otherfiles that have been stored on the GPS memory card.
Once the Garmin GPS unit is reseted, remember to place the deviceoutside where there is a clear unobstructed view of the sky for 15– 30 minutes in order for it to requires fix to GPS satellites.
Unfortunately, even if you perform master reset on Garmin GPS unit,it does not reset Garmin Lock security feature, which password-protectmost Garmin electronic devices to deter theft. If you forget the PIN orpassword unlock code to unlock the Garmin unit, the best solution is tobring it to Garmin to get unlocked. “Secure Location” doesnot unlock a locked Garmin unit either as it’s only a temporaryfix as when it’s turn on outside the security location, thedevice is locked again.

Garmin Nuvi 610 not Acquiring satelites. it was working fine and while driving suddenly said something about poor reception, now nothing

Hello,

Its sounds like your GPS's internal receiver is broken, you may be able to fix this with a firmware update but it is likely you will have to purchase an external antenna for your GPS to be functional.

Hope this helps!

My GPS cannot detect the satellite signal.

Garmin says:

If your GPSMAP 60CSx will not acquire a satellite signal when outside with a clear view of the sky, please try the following:
  1. Click here http://garmin.com/products/webupdater/howtoinstall.jsp
  2. Follow the onscreen instructions to install and update your unit
  3. Once updated allow for the device to set free from obstructions for 20 minutes to acquire satellites
If this does not work then we suggest doing a master reset with your device - Note: A master reset will erase all waypoints or favorites and will restore your device to the default factory settings. To perform the master reset please do the following:

  1. Turn the device OFF
  2. Press and hold Quit + Menu + Out + Power
  3. The device screen will then flash and will power on
  4. Leave the device turned ON with a clear view of the sky without moving it for approximately 30 minutes so that it may acquire satellites

If still unable to acquire satellites, contact Garmin Customer Support via one of the methods below:

I bought a sat navigation (unknown) brand from ebay few years ago.it came with route 66 map installed on sd card.how i can upgrade the maps on it?

The GPS system sounds like it may be a Garmin brand and the mapset you're talking about sounds a lot like the "Mad Maps" for "Route 66". The Mad Map collection consists of specialized maps for particular use or interest. There are maps other than the Route 66 map in the collection available.

Depending on GPS model, you may be able to download new maps to the GPS or obtain new maps on memory cards from Garmin directly. The Route 66 map card may not be large enough to hold current US maps - new US maps require 1 to 2 GB of memory.

Contact Garmin Customer Support to determine which GPS model you have and which map products are available for it, below:

Garmin Nuvi 680 Touch Screen "touch" works intermittently

Recalibration has nothing to do with repairing this problem. If the touchscreen is non-responsive, how are you going to recalibrate it when it doesn't recognize the key presses?

The problem is caused by a defective touchscreen. SHARP substitued a different touchscreen into the 6xx series that fails even when the glass isn't damaged. The problem is caused by a defect in the manufacturing process where the touchscreen connections becomes detached from the tail that plugs into the board.

The touchscreen connections between the screen and the tail are made from conductive ink that can fracture, most likely caused when pressing on the screen over time.

These defective screens can be identified by a white tail cap at the end of the tail, whereas the original touchscreens have a maroon tail cap. The original touchscreens will only fail if the glass has been broken.

I only use the original touchscreens for all of my repairs.

I can hear the other person on the phone through

It appears you have successfully paired the cell to the GPS, so going forward:

The mic on the 760 is behind a very small opening on the front left bezel (if my memory serves me right) of the 760. If you are far away from the mic, the other person will have trouble understanding you. If you can get closer to the GPS during a test call, ask the other person if they can understand you any better. If they are unable to hear you at all, there is a problem with the mic or mic circuit. There is no adjustment for the mic. If the 760 is no longer under warranty, it may be cheaper to buy an external mic. Garmin sells one - but you may find one at radio Shack, etc. An external mic is connected to the cradle - not the GPS directly. If neither internal or external mic works, it's a problem within the unit and will likely have to be sent to Garmin for repair.

When turn on always says poor satellite reception,

Hi Carlos,

You are receiving that message because the GPS is unable to acquire satellites. Satellite reception can be limited due to one or more of the follow reasons: Poor view of the sky, GPS antenna not deployed, used indoors or other internal problems.

Try taking the device outside in full view of the sky - preferably with little or no tree cover, tall buildings, etc. and allow up to 2 minutes to acquire satellites.

If unable to acquire, it may require return to Garmin for repair. Contact Garmin based on your location and product below:

My eTREX VISTA won't get a satelite fix any more

The unit needs to have the screen facing up. The unit will not read if it is vertical. Garmin cust serv finally helped me with that one. Once you turn on the unit, it could take up to 20 minutes (usually about 3) to grab satelites.
