Yes, you need the power cord that will go from a 12 volt socket in the car to the GPS receiver.
Best Buy, Radio Shack or possibly Walmart should have one.

...I am on my 3rd GPS ...the first 2 were Nextar ..... guess what kind my current one is ...... certainly not another Nextar

On some cars the power continues to go to the cigarette lighter socket when the car is turned off but on others it doesn't. If your cigarette lighter socket still has power when the car is turned off then it should not be left plugged in as it will shorten the life of the battery.

Also you should plug the charger out before starting the car as the alternator can send a surge of power through the system when the car starts and many satnavs have been burned out by this surge.

You'll either have to query your model number on amazon, or you can purchase directly from nextar here.

A generic 12 volt adapter should work. I replaced mine recently. They usually come with multiple sizes of round ends and can adjust the output voltage. The side of the device will tell you the polarity and the voltage required. If it says something like 5 V but the adapter only has 4.5 V or 6 V, select the closer choice. If they're about equal, select the lower one. It is better to have an under volt than an over volt.
