It is not recognized because it has not been "initialized". Need to go to the Maxtor support site and download the driver software that will initialize the drive. If you boot up windows with the drive plugged into a usb port, windows might just be able to search windows update for a driver or a small window may pop up and state that the drive has not been activated and would you like to open the activation wizard, click yes and follow the prompts.

Lost install cd software bundle

Hard drives usually self install. Unplug the driver and switch it of so it is disconnected from the USB. restart your computer. turn the power back on for the drive and Plug the USB lead back in to the computer (When started up). Windows should install the driver automatically. This will take about a minute or two.

Maxtor external hard dive

body { background: #FFFFFF; margin: 0px; padding: 4px; font-family: arial, verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; } p { margin:0px; padding:0px; } .spwrap { background: transparent url(../wysiwyg_rte/misspell.gif) repeat-x scroll center bottom; } This is definitaly the drive itself that is close to or totally gone. You can send it into a data recovery center to have your pics taken off the drive but this can be expenive to do and it may not be possible depending on how the drive failed.

Kind Regards

Bought 500Gb two months ago, greatproduct. My wife has put 4 months of college photography on the hardrive and has had no problems retrieving.Suddenly two nights ago stopped working, power light is on...

Plug it into a friend's computer (in the same cables as his main drive) (Turn the system off and pull the plug out first!) Tell us if it works there.

Data loss happens all the time for various reasons. That's why you need to learn how to use a CD burning program to transfer the pictures to CD's. If you don't want to burn often, get yourself a 16GB little flash drive at least.

Light turns on but My Computer does not recognize the drive

Sounds like you lost the drivers for your external. W/ out an online PC you cannot download them either. Do you have a friend that could do this on their PC? That is the only way.

I bought a HP M8430F and would like to install a 2nd hard drive

By set up differently you mean and ATA or SATA difference? That shoudll not matter as long as  the windows are alread on the first harddrive of the HP  Since your drive that you want to move is the second drive and does not contain the operating syastem you should be able to just phisically move the drive from one machine to the other. The new computer will see and install the drive as "FOund ne hardware" and asign it a letter. It will not disturb the data.

Maxtor 1tr wrong power cord was hooked up to it

If you plugged the wrong power cord into it, it could have damaged the power supply in the drive. You may have to get it repaired.

Maxtor 3200 320GB Not being detected

if you plugged in an incorrect power cable it is very possible it could be damaged if the voltage from the incorrect cable exceeds the drive. try hooking it on another PC, to verify if it's the drive or PC

Hope this helps
