Non-system disk or disk error - Remove disks or other media.

My laptop has no drives, so I have to use an external cd/dvd drive. I have recently reformatted laptop since it would only boot with BartPe when it felt like it. The bios is set to firstly boot from the CD-Rom and on each attempt I get the above msg. I thought it might be my drive so I tried a different one and the problem is still there. What can I do to resolve it in order to reinstall windows all over again.? Since I reformatted the FAT HDD the only button that I know to work is the F10 Bios Configuration. If anyone knows the answer it would be gratefully appreciated. Thank you

    I have checked the boot options in the BIOS & the usb is already enabled as the first option. Although the HDD is now blank since its format I have even enabled that. too. Everything is enabled. Except Floppy Drive which I do not have.

    I know I should be able to boot from usb with any disk but I have tried 2 different ext.drives and neither pick up any of th cds inserted. When I try to reboot the drive briefly lights up then goes out again followed by that error message. I don't have an external floppy drive. A flash dirve I don't know what it is and if I were to buy one would it definitely resolve the problem. I have a Notebook NIC don't know what that is, probably some type of internal but it doesn't boot it up either. Just a moment Bartpe started to install but then it failed half way through computer crashed. So what next? Any other solutions. Someone mentioned using a HDD IDE Adapter Cable does that make any sense?.

    What with my computer being temperamental I somehow finally managed to boot up BartPe but that is the only disk that boots. I have even tried Knopix. Does anyone know if and how you can install windows with BartPe? Much appreciated

    I have checked the bios and the usb usb port is set as the first to boot from an external drive. I tried a linux disk too and got to the first screen where it says boot and pressed F2 then something started loading before it crashed and with that disk whenever it does decide to load it continally crashes. BartPe occasionally works without crashing. Can I boot from BartPe or can I stop it from crashing with Knoppix boot disk?. If anyone know your help will be appreciated. Many Thanks

    I do have another laptop can I insert the HDD from that and put it in my Evo N410c or do I have to use the adapter cable.

Wat da hell solutions am jus't gonna kill ma self cuz of **** sumthin' called bios i got a shock cuz of it am professional in sumthin' called computers but the hell sumthin' which i have no idea about is BIOS

Enable the option to check other boot devices, it should be the next option after the third boot device, also select the first device as USB DVD/CD

    if you have an extra hard disk. Replace the external usb cd/dvd. drive with the harddisk, this is compatible(dont worry, just unplug the cd/dvd drive in the ext.drive casing and plug in the harddisk, this is compatiable, no problem) it would be better if you install win98 on the extra disk on another computer and copy the winxp installation files from the cd to a folder on the extra harddisk.



    Now boot your system with ext usb hdd in the bios setting.

    win98 should come up, then run the setup file for winxp from this drive. this will copy the installation files for winxp and then the system will restart. dont remove the ext. disk untill you windows installation is done.

SET THE LAPTOP TO BOOT FROM USB or what ever connection you are using to conect the external drive to the laptop. setting it to boot from cd will look for an internal drive
to boot from the external drive you need to set it to boot from usb

Well if you have the BIOS set to boot from CD you should be able to put in any bootable CD (windows installer, Ubuntu livecd) and install a OS....But it sounds like you are getting this Non-system disk error everytime w/ more than one CD drive correct? If so, thats not good. You will have to boot up using a different device.. If your bios allows you can boot to a flash drive to get by the issue. Or a floppy drive, if you have access to one.

<p><b>Issue:</b><br /> <p>Non-System disk or disk error<br /><br /> <p><img src="reyjoshua07.jpg" /><br /> <p><b>Cause:</b><br /> <p>The current media is not bootable or there was a disk error in attempting to boot.<br /><br /> <p><b>Workaround:</b><br /> <p> <br /> <p>1. <b>Change Boot Media </b><br /> <p>If you are booting from either a DVD, CD, diskette or a USB drive, remove the media and boot from the hard disk. The media is either damaged or is not intended to be bootable.<br /> <p> <br /> <p>2. <b>Set the Correct BIOS Boot Choice </b><br /> <p>The BIOS may be configured to boot from the wrong device. If you suspect this, the device boot order can be changed in the BIOS setup. Be aware there little consistency in BIOS setup operations, even with the same manufacturer on different models. As such, these instructions are bit less precise than we'd prefer.<br /> <p> <br /> <p>Reboot and enter the BIOS setup. Often the BIOS displays the correct key to use briefly on screen or you may need to refer to the computer's user manual. Typically you hold down the Del, Esc, F1 or F2 key immediately after booting.<br /> <p> <br /> <p>Look for a section on Boot or Booting. Often this appears on top menu. Select the Boot option, and if necessary the Boot order choice. The Boot order choices should list the order of boot devices. Recheck that the drives are properly installed and the cabling has not changed. Switching cables to different motherboard connectors or changing the master/slave drive jumpers (on old ATA drives) can cause this problem. In some systems, the cables were not plugged into the drive or motherboard securely and may have worked loose. Reseat all drive connectors.<br /> <p>It's also possible a hard drive is failing. Laptop won'y start up has non-system disk or disk error
The error PXE-E61: Media test failure usually means the hard diskhas failed or the hard disk needs re-seating or the disk controller is faulty.First - re-seat the harddisk and reboot the computer. If the computer does not boot up then reboot andgo into the BIOS configuration to see if the BIOS detects the hard drive. If itdoesn't detect the hard drive then it could be faulty.Then the hard drive needsto be replaced in the computer/laptop, Windows installed and the computer orlaptop's device drivers plus your programs etc. to get a functioningcomputer/laptop again.

First thing you do is to see what hard disc installed in your laptop. You can check that by checking it in your bios system. To check in your bios system first turn off your computer then press delete while your laptop is booting up. Then you will see if there is a hard disk detected in your lap top if there is a detected hard drive this means you have a problem in your windows installed in your lap top.
There is also a reason why those message appear if the first boot of your laptop is the CD/DVD ROM. Check you CD/DVD ROM if there a CD inside this may the first on to read while the laptop booting up. Remove the cd inside your CD/DVD ROM. Then restart your laptop. Check your hard disk connector it may have some loose contact thats why your laptop did not recognize the hard disc.

Hp labtop non system disk error
Hi, this error most often occurs when you try to boot your computer up with either a flash drive (USB drive) or a CD/DVD already in the computer. The system checks these drives first for operating systems before the hard drive, and when it doesn't find your operating system it displays that error. Remove the disk or flash drive and try to boot your computer again, and the error should go away.

To resolve this issue, use one or more of the following methods, and then restart your computer:
  • Remove the non-system disk from your boot device. For example, remove the non-system disk from the floppy drive or the CD-ROM drive.
  • Change your computer's boot sequence. To do this, you must change your computer's setup and the option that controls which device your computer uses to start from. Make sure that you select a device that has boot files (or operating system files) installed.
  • If you start your computer from a hard disk drive, install a bootable operating system (such as Windows XP) on the drive.

GETTING ON MY LAPTP: PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
This error message can be caused by a faulty connection to the hard drive or a faulty hard drive or a faulty disk controller.
Go into the BIOS configuration to see if it has detected the hard drive, if it is not detected that is why the laptop won't bootup.
To confirm or check if the hard drive is faulty, remove the hard drive and connect it to an USB hard drive adapter and connect it to a working computer's USB port (you may need assistance from a computer savy friend).
If this computer cannot see this as an external drive then it is faulty. If the computer can see this drive as an external drive and you can open the folders and files on the hard disk then the hard drive is OK and the fault is probably a faulty disk controller on the laptop. A faulty disk controller is part of the motherboard and the only fix is a replacement motherboard. This may not be a cost effective solution and it may be better to put your money towards a new laptop.

This means it cannot read the HDD in the machine. Have you left a disk in the CD/DVD slot or a usb drive in one of the usb ports?

You may have to insert your operating system disk in the CD/DVD drive and do a repair installation.
