Polycom Soundpoint IP 501 - URL call is disabled

I get the message 'URL call is disabled' on the phone I just connected. The phone shows the phone number and goes through the set-up, but doesn't have a dial tone.

This in it's most basic description means that the phone is unable to register with the SIP server, most likely for lack of internet connectivity or a firewall blocking the packets.

If you've verified connectivity and opened the proper ports and the phone fails to initialize and still getting “URL Call Disabled” or all of the above parameters are correct, update the firmware for the router. This can usually be done within the router configuration. Then reboot in order, the cable modem or DSL, the router or switch, then the phone. This may solve the problem.

If still having the same issue, confirm in the router configuration for settings such as SIP proxy, gateway, or application layer or any configuration setting for SIP or VOIP. If any of these do exist, make sure they are turned off as these may only confuse or adversely affect many implementations.

If you are getting the error message URL dialing disabled, this means that the feature in the config file is disabled and the Polycom phone is not registered against any of the line's configured registration servers.

If you are using autoconfig make sure that the file sip.cfg has

feature.9.name="url-dialing" feature.9.enabled=1

I have a problem regarding my Polycom Soundpoint IP331. It doesn't boot anymore. It shows only an error which is error.cfg.

You need to reinstall all the files back onto the phone. You can get the files from the Polycom Website. You can also follow the instruction from my Polycom 501 Fixya blog to see how its done.

What does this message mean: Url call is disabled

This means that your phone will not dial a url number, i.e. sip://[email protected]. This is generally a network or configuration error, and I would specifically make sure the phone either has static DNS entries entered or is receiving DNS entries via DHCP.

Have you tried a factory reset from the menu interface? Be careful if you do, and only choose "Format File System" as a last resort, and only if you feel comfortable enough setting up a FTP/TFTP boot server to re-provision the phone, as this option will erase everything, and then all it'll do is get stuck in a boot cycle until reprovisioned.
