Probably not.

I would expect to find two belts on a riding mower; one to drive the riding lawn mower (lets call this the DRIVER) and one to drive the actual mower part (lets call this the MOWER).

To answer your question one way, if the driver belt is off, it will still cut grass, but you cant move the mower. If the mower belt is off, it will move but not cut the grass.

If your belt is broken, take it to an automotive parts store or garden equipment place for replacement. You might also support a FixYa.com advertiser.

I hope this answers your question. Thanks for posting at FixYa.com and please vote.

thanks

How to stop blades when not not cutting grass

If you are talking about a riding lawn mower, there is a lever that makes the pulley come in contact with the belt that drives the mower deck.

I changed the deck drive belt & the baldes spin but when I lower the cut height from the highest setting(5) down one (4) the blades spin slows down too much & it's not cutting the grass. I need to...

Sounds like you had to change the belt because their is too much resistance in the shafts that the blades are attached to. This may be from grass. Anyway, that is where I would check, to make sure everything turns freely when not connected to the belt .

Craftsman riding lawn mower won t cut grass

Does it die when you attempt to engage the cutting deck? If so the you might have a clogged fuel filter, bad gas, dirty air filter, bad spark plug.
Or the mower engage switch may be faulty. They are located in different places on different mowers. But should be attached somewhere along the main pivot of the engage lever. Let me know if you need more assistance. Good Luck!!

The Fan Belt that drives the grass cutting blade is broken. Where can I buy a new Fan Belt for the mower? Im living in Norway. Thanks

Thought they used zambonis to shave their ice, now I find out they have growing grass in Norway. Look in the phone book, business section, for small engine/lawn mower repair shops. These guys actually also sell mower parts. Will vastly help, as there are scores of different belts, if you take along your old belt or the name and model of your mower.

It's fun to ride around the yard on the mower, watching scrubby grass (and weeds) turn into trimmed lawn. However, when the grass looks as bad after you mow as it did before, or the mower doesn't want to start, riding mowers aren't as much fun. That's when it's time to put on your Fix-It Club hat and have some more fun.

A riding lawn mower is a gas-powered machine for cutting grass. The engine turns a rotating blade that cuts the top off the grass blades to a specified height. The operator sits atop the mower on a tractor-type seat with speed and height controls nearby. Riding mowers also can be used to pull small utility carts for other yard jobs.

To remove the mower deck:
  1. Make sure that the parking brake is locked.
  2. Place scrap lumber under the front and rear of the deck.
  3. Use the deck lever to lower the deck.
  4. Remove attachments from the deck.
  5. Remove the blade drive belt from the front pulley.
  6. Remove the front and rear deck fasteners, following instructions in your owner's manual.
  7. Use the deck lever to raise the deck.
  8. Remove the scrap lumber.
  9. Remove the deck from under the mower.
To adjust the drive belt:
  1. Remove the belt from the large idler pulley.
  2. Remove the belt from the adjustable idler pulley.
  3. Carefully remove the spring-loaded large idler pulley.
  4. Loosen the adjustable idler pulley and move it slightly toward the rear of the mower to tighten it[md]or move it toward the front to loosen it—and retighten the pulley.
  5. Replace the belt.
  6. Check belt tension and readjust as needed.

Craftsman 42" riding lawn mower blade free spinning but wont cut

It sounds to me that you need a new mower deck drive belt, or your blades need sharpening. If the blade edges are rounded, they won't cut butter... Also, when mower is off, check mower deck drive pulleys to make sure you don't have any that are locked up or are dragging. You can check this by pulling the belt away from pulley and spinning the pulley by hand. MOWER MUST BE OFF before attempting any of these checks. You would be surprised how many people would try this with the mower running.
Hope this helps
