Hum can come from a jillion different places. Is this hum coming from the unit with no speakers connected, or is it heard through the speakers? What sources are being used? What cables? Are thereany common sources of interference near? Troubleshooting is difficult without much information.
Bad transformer? Copy following link for tips keeping the next power pack running longer, and warranty coverage on Intermatic/Malibu ML200 power pack. http://waterheatertimer.org/Malibu-power-pack-stopped-working.html Try plugging power pack into extension cord from different outlet,,, but if timer is keeping good time, I suspect the incoming voltage is adequate. I would stop using the adapter immediately. It could be about to blow. When one of these blows, you can get smoke, sparks and fire. You don't want that to happen when you are not around. Further you don't want to have a voltage spike from the adapter to *********** board. You can buy a new adapter at Walmart or whereever. Just be sure that it supports Dell computers. Dell uses a third pin frequently. Check the voltage and amperage of your current adapter. You should see something like 19V and 3 Amps. Make sure that your replacement adapter works within those rages.
You can also buy an exact match from Dell or ebay.
Expect a good Universal adapter that you buy at Walmart to be in the range of 50-100.
The good thing about a universal adapter is that you can use it on another notebook later.
Often over the years the Transformer laminations can loosen, from the on/off rising and collapsing magnetic fields, and then they sorta hum louder. I suspect this is what is going on. Shouldn't be too much of a worry.. keep an eye on it tho.
