It the cd drive hub or the spindle motor pad is dirty.
It isn't clamping the disk firmly so when the drive
speeds up or stops abruptly the disc continues
to spin , it shouldn't cause surface damage to
the cd but it sounds like hell .
If you disassemble the xbox and the cd rom
drive ,clean the the hub and spindle motors pad
this should remedy the noise problem.
Also there is the possibility that
the hub magnet came loose this
would decress the clamping force
of the hub, than you would need to
snap the round magnet in the Hub
back in to place . if get there
let me know and ill explain further
if you have any questions just comment and ill respond

You need to strip down the drive inside the 360, it is possibly an Hitatchi 78, 79fk or 79fl drive and they are notorious for the spindle magnet coming loose. Take the screws out of the drive and take the top off, look underneath, is there a little round silver magnet stuck to the middle of the white plastic?
if so take it off, and stick it back intot he bottom drive spindle (you should be able to see where its come from). i use a tiny amount of superglue and remember not to put it back together straight away as the glue fumes 'can' damage the laser eye.

got it torn apart blew it all out with canned air made sure the magnet was still attatched as described in the other solution posted. thinking about just replacing the drive. it is a hitachi model gdr-3120L as stated on its sticker. none of this type appear on ebay only samsung toshiba or benQ brands appear and they state that vthey must be "flashed" before they will work. what does it all mean? can my drive be replaced with another brand? can you "flash" it yourself?
