My Poulan Pro 260 chainsaw will start and run when the choke is pulled out, but as soon as I disengage the choke, the saw dies. Do I need to have the carbuerator checked?

  • Anonymous Mar 17, 2014

I may have got the mix wrong. The chainsaw worked for a while, but now will not stay running. It will start but as soon as I pull the trigger to start the blade, it dies.

It is running in a lean condition. Continued operation like that can cause piston and cylinder failure.
I'd take it in for repair estimate ($10) at the local chainsaw seller/mechanic. Explain the problem you are having, Probably a leaking fuel line. I'd expect a repair and tune up about $40-60. Your saw will perform better and your arm will thank you. If tuned ask what fuel/oil ratio they used (should be 50:1) and affix a label to your fuel tank. HTH

Fuel starvation - 'lean fuel' condition
Basic things to check:
1) spark plug
2) spark arrestor in muffler
3) fuel lines and tank filter
4) turn adjustment needles out (counterclockwise) 1/4 to 1/2 turn
Chain Saws:
5) check impulse tube and intake boot for cracks or leaks
*if all of the above are OK and/or do not improve performance then:
Remove Carburetor
6) replace gaskets/diaphragms
a) use a spray carb cleaner to clean jets, holes, and body of carb
b) fuel pump diaphragm goes against the carb body,
then the gasket towards the outside
c) metering gasket goes against the carb body,
and the diaphragm goes towards the outside

2 cycle gas even if mixed right plugs the needle seats unless the saw is used consistently, try this first, get a can of carb cleaner and try running this aerosol thru the carb while its running and see if this helps, then the gas may finish the clean-out process

How do you chage a choke knob on a poular chain saw

If the knob is attached to a cable you will need to replace the entire cable which comes with the knob attached. You can just follow the cable and determine how to route the new one and attach it the same as now to the carb.

Poulan Pro Wild Thing will only run with choke out. Carb has been fully rebuilt and new lines added. As soon as throttle is pulled and choke pops off, engine dies. Any recommendations/suggestions? Thanks,...

If not already done replace the fuel filter in the tank, it is obviously fuel starvation, if no better increase the the fuel mixture on the H and L screws ( turn anti clockwise 1/4 turn on each to start with)

I have a poulan pro chainsaw it runs fine when choked but when i squeeze the trigger it dies what is wronr with it

It is running too lean, start with the simple things first, replace the fuel filter in the tank, check all the fuel hoses for signs of damage or fuel leaks, replace as required, if all these things are ok, you need to richen up the mixture screws on the carb ( you may need special tools to do this if they are anti tamper screws ) unscrew 1/8 turn on each and try again.

I have a poulan pro 4018. THe chain saw will start, but it appears that the choke is on full blast. As soon as it starts, the chain is moving - unsafe at the moment - I can use it as long as I don't...

Check the fuel filter, air filter, and muffler for plugging. Check the fuel lines for decay or other damage. Turn the idle speed screw (T) CCW somewhat to prevent the chain from turning at idle. If the above doesn't allow the engine to run without the choke on, then remove the carburetor, clean the interior with spray carburetor cleaner and check the diaphragm in the lower chamber for flexibility with no holes or cracks. Hope this helps!
