Can this be used with a MAC?

My father just bought this router, and I am having trouble setting it up. The currently hard-wired computer is a MAC running OSX, and is connected to a Westell Wirespeed modem; model 890 21001504. When I attempt to connect the modem to the router, via an ethernet cabel to the WAN slot in the back of the router, then connect the Mac to the router, via an ethernet cabel to the LAN-1 (2,3 or 4), neither the mac can access the internet, nor can i find the router with a wireless laptop. I found the default server name for the router, 192.168.254.254, and have gone through the resetting process, and have still had no luck.

Am I connecting the cabels accurately?
Can this router even be used in this way with a MAC?

I appreciate your time and help,

Thank you,
Mario

Any router will work, TCP/IP is a network standard, definately double check the cables. Your DSL modem is usually 192.168.254.254. and the router is usually 192.168.1.1. Check your documentation for the default IP. Once you know it type it in to the broswer in your Mac. Before doing so connect with an ethernet cable, purchase a new one if necessary. Connect from the <--> labeled port on the mac, or ethernet port. These wires are not like phone lines, they have 8 wires instead of 4/6. The router usually has ports on the back labeled 1, 2, 3, 4, and WAN. the 1-4 ports are LAN and that is also labeled on there. Plug the mac into port 1 and any other computers in after you get internet. once the physical connection is recognized. Go to your browser in the mac and proceed. if you get a web based router configuration page your router is working, then make the WAN connection to the ethernet port on the back of the dsl mode. Be sure your cables are good. Also go to your control panel and make sure your internet is enabled in your network section.

How to activate the wireless LAN connection?

You need to go into the wireless router and do what they call Clone Mac address. In other words you need to take the mac address that is in your computer that you say they use, and put it into your wireless router. This makes them think that the wireless router is your computer. Then everybody can connect.

On your computer that is currently working, click Start/Programs/ and look for the RUN or CMD prompt and open it. If you fin the Run Command just type cmd and click ok to open the CMD prompt. In the Command Prompt type: ipconfig /all and press Enter
This will show you the MAC Address of the current wired Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection for the computer. it will be a series of 2 digit numbers/letters with dashes between them such as A1-99-B7-24-XG and it is called the Physical Address (which is the mac address). Write down that mac address so you can remember it.

When you take that ethernet port out of the computer and put it into the router's LAN or WAN port (not ports 1,2,3,4) then you will take another ethernet cable and plug it into the back of the computer that had the ethernet cable, and the other end can go into one of the 4 ports.

Now log into the router from the computer by typing the router's ip address (normally something like 192.168.1.1) then put in the default userid and password and go set up (configure the router) . Under the basic settings look for something called Clone Mac address and you can click it and it should put in the address you wrote down on paper. Then go to the wireless tab or wireless settings and setup the wireless by giving it a SSID to identify your network and a password if you want it secured.

If you internet service provider is a Phone company such as AT&T then you will want the router configured PPOE under the basic settings and you will have to give it the Internet Userid and Password (this is not your email user id and password). You might have to call the phone company to get it. If your internet service Provider is a Cable Company then they use DHCP and you don't have to supply a userid or password.

Hopefully you have a manual or cd with the router. Manuals are very helpful and some manufacturers have the cd do the configuration for you.

Hi i just purchased a D-Link DIR-412. I'm trying to login to http://192.168.0.1/ and the manual states to enter user=admin & leave the password blank. This is not working. I'm on a mac Os X,...

Did you capitalize Admin? It's capitalized in the manual, and user names are usually case sensitive.

If you can't get through the login process, you probably won't get the connectivity, either.

The manual says set the switch on the back to 3g mode during setup. After checking that, you might try using the RESET button on the back - while the router is powered, press and hold for 10 seconds and release. After the router restarts, reboot your computer and try connecting again.

I have a Linksys wireless-G 2.4 GHz router directly connected to my PC. I've just bought a MacBook Pro and want to go online via this router. The Macbook finds the router but cannot connect to...

The reason you cannot connect, is you have to match the settings from your router to Airport- usually it requires you setting the security on your router to a specific WPA2, Wep, or no security- invariably I have had trouble getting clients to get online with the WPA2 set to the either or setting- but set it to either public or private- they're online. Anyhow, in order to do that- you will need to log into your router- if you have a pc/mac hard wired into the linksys via ethernet, open a web browser window and go to 192.168.1.1- it would be under wireless security. Match the settings on your Macbook, you should be able to go wireless at that point. Another solution, depending on your internet service provider... is that the provider could share your system remotely and assist with getting you online wirelessly (I know for a fact that Verizon DSL Business does do this. )

1. There may be 3 issues here to consider 1st :

2.Here is a instruction set to follow to see if your router is connected properly with the said pc :
1.Log into router. Using either 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.1.1 in a browser window that is ( internet Explorer or firefox) on the computer that doesn't connect.
2. Verify wireless router name( on the computer) >>> ( on/off) ( router status window)
3.Note router name you are connecting to.
4.. Check the laptop do ipconfig /all to see current IP addresses.
5. Set the laptop/desktop up in the router by WEP KEY or MAC address. This set up in the "security tab" in the router. using 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 to access through a browser.
6.Note router name you are connecting to.
7. use a straight through Ethernet cord ( a know good one )\
8. verify that the network card is working by using a loop back ( that is ping the NIC card ( done by using dos command prompt>> loopback address is 127.0.0.1 this should yield 4 hops complete if the NIC card is working ( NIC = Network Interface Card)
I hope this helps. Have a great day!

Two computers can not get on-line simultaneously

How do you connect the two computers? Are they connected via Ethernet cable or wireless connection or wired and wireless?

If you're trying to connect the two computers wirelessly at the same time, there should be no problem. But you need to refer to the user manual of the router to see how many wireless clients it could support.

After verifying the number of wireless clients, access the logs of your wireless router and see how many MAC addresses are currently connected. Because there's a possibility that there are unknown wireless computers that are connected to the computer.

You may contact the manufacturer of the router to set a MAC filter and allow your two computers to connect. MAC filter is a highly secure filter that most routers have.

If you find out that only two computers were connected, then you might want to upgrade the firmware of your router to resolve your problem.

Good luck and have a great day!

Problems setting up new macs and a new wireless system with a PC

The MAC address of the network card on the PC is probably registered with Tiscali. The easiest thing to do is to Connect the Belkin router to the internet, then go into the config and clone the MAC address of the windows PC. Once this is done, then you can either plug in the airport express, or configure wifi for the Macs from the belkin.

Wireless Networking With a Linksys Wireless-G WRT54GX Router?

k2rt9ceswg,

You seem rather savvy so I won't bore you with frivolous explanation. Essentially ISPs detect the MAC address of whatever device is plugged into their network. In the case of your laptop connected wired to your modem, the MAC address of your wired adapter is what is tied to your ISP account. When you plugged in a router, the MAC address of that router was different than your laptop's wired network adapter and your ISP said "nope, not letting that connect". This is something most ISPs are doing now-a-days.

You can get around this by following these steps:
  1. Plug your PC back into the modem wired
  2. Ensure you have internet connection again
  3. Go to Start -> run and type "cmd" without quotes
  4. Type "ipconfig /release" without the quotes (there is a space in there that needs to be in there)
  5. Disconnect your PC from the modem and plug the router into it
  6. Plug another LAN cable into the router and your laptop
  7. In the same command prompt, type "ipconfig /renew"
If the computer pulls an IP address for the wired ethernet, you should be all set to disconnect the cable from the router and PC and try to connect to it wireless. If it doesn't pull an IP address, you'll need to contact your ISP and inform them that you're having trouble getting your new router to work with your existing network.

You might also consider depressing the reset button located on the back of your Linksys router to set the router to its default configuration. This would clear all previous settings if there were any and might clear up any configuration options you had set when previously using this router.
