My Mac OS X doesn't recognize my Maxtor One Touch

My Mac OS X doesn't recognize my "Maxtor One Touch 4Plus" external drive. It recognized it before. I ran disk utility and tried to repair disk to see if that helps. But, it didn't. Help, I don't want to lose my files.

Try unplugging both the power and data cables from both the computer and the hard drive. Let the hard drive spin down. Plug the cables back in. It should become visible with no loss of files.

Maxtor one touch 4 plus problems: Drive not recognized by my Mac. I can hear the hard drive whirring but the computer thinks it isn't turned on.

You need to determine whether the drive is OK. I suggest trying the drive on another computer before you move on.I trust that you have re-booted the mac? Also try a different cable and USB socket just to be on the safe side.
I hope I have been of help but please do not hesitate to ask if you have any further questions.

External HDD no longer recognized by new win7 PC

Probably not the right answer for your problem. Mine is an external 1 TB Simple Drive. Mine wouldn't respond at all. I unplugged the power cable from the back of the hard drive and replugged it in and instantly it worked. I had tried rebooting the computer, plugging/unplugging over and over into the computer and that didn't work.

Maxtor one-touch mini won't appear on PC

To isolate the problem, please try the steps below:

1. Make sure that the USB ports of your PC are working.
2. Try to connect the device into different USB ports.
3. Try to connect it into different Windows based computer.

Question: Did you reformat this device using your Mac? If yes, there could be a possibility that the device was reformatted using the Mac OSX (Journaled). This type of format would only recognized by Mac computers.

But if it's formatted using the DOS based system, it would work on both Mac and PC.

My Mac laptop running OS X 10.5.5 is not recognizing my Maxtor One Touch 4 Mini 320gb external drive. I plug it in, the light on the drive comes on, but nothing else happens.

check to make sure the drive is formatted to the FAT file system as NTFS file system is not recognised on Macs (check the drive on a PC and have the PC format the drive to the FAT file system)

Old Maxtor/New Maxtor

If files you are trying to restore are encrypted you will have to use same software to retrieve them.. If not, any file in the external hard drive should be viewable with your windows explorer.

And U do not need drivers for external hard drives. They just plug into your usb port and work with modern OS after the unit is recognized.

Maxtor one touch iii not recognized

Does Windows recognize that there is anything plugged in at all?

If not it could be your USB interface (on the Maxtor) is shot.
