This is a serious situation. I would suggest you contact a repair tech to check it out. If you have children present and they get the door open while it is running, it can be very dangerous. I would shut off power to it until it can be checked out.
I have minor shutdown problem with mail, won't close or shut down. My ans top left APPLE drop down, force closure, turn of each programme listed. For me works a treat.
You have an optic sensor that is blocked or shorted. If you take it apart you should be able to identify the problem. It is up by where the paper feeds in.
Hold down the power button for 10 seconds. That will hard-shut the PC. Once that is done, fire it back up, and try again. Somethimes, windows will act goofy shutting down. Especially Vista when it is left on too long without shutting it down.
